Vietnam is in process of being industrialized. I have been visiting many industrial parks in HCM City, Dong Nai and Binh Duong in last 5 years. Yes, Vietnam can industrialise. but in 2020? I really don't know.

I would say it's up to the government of Vietnam. For years, they collect taxes but I 've seen they put very little of the money back to build the country. They talk about it but little has been done. Just remember, this is a very corrupted government. They tax the crap out of businesses and government officials would pocket 80% of the taxes. My relatives in Vietnam have small business. They would pay 100 billions Dong to government every year. There are so many more businesses like their in Vietnam that generated huge cash in taxes. Where do the money go?

Vietnam economy is also a cash economy. No one trusts government banks. The transportation is sux. I've seen maybe they build new highways in Binh Duong area. But roads around HCMC are narrow and congested.

Depite hypes created by communist government about fastest growth in economy, it's going to be a long way for Vietnam to become an industrious country. But I hope someday Vietnam will catch up to China where I've seen miles and miles of beautiful highways and highrises everywhere... I hope.

With a smaller population and pretty healthy growth rate, I would have thought it would be easier and earlier for Vietnam to modernize.

You compare Vietnam and China's highways. Dude come on, China is like 10x to 20x bigger than Vietnam. And it's not the goverment fault as if the roads in Saigon are small. The design of Saigon itself was designed by the French idiots.

You can blame for poor infracsture, but saying Vietnamese goverment is responsible for narrow and congest roads in Saigon IS ONE of the most idiotic thing I've ever heard.

I asume you don't know anything about Vietnam.

For long time, there are talk about traffic congestion and polution in HCMC. It was 5 years ago. Today it's unchanged. Oh, maybe it changed. Here are the changes: The government set up tool booths around HCMC to make it more congest. Every 5 kilometers on roads around city, you stop and pay toll.

Now, I am talking about intercity highways and roads lead to major airports or seaports. That's around the city and have nothing to do with French idiots. In order to ship goods quickly to anywhere on earth from most industrial parks, Vietnam has to improve their transportation.

How do people define the term "industrialized"?

a lot of pollution

I think the original poster got confused with Malaysia, they were the ones who had a political campagined called "Vision 2020" (pronouced twenty twenty) as a goal to be industrialised by 2020.

As for Vietnam? I'd probably say they are 5 to 10 years behind Thailand economics wise. To industrialise by 2020 would be a huge goal for Vietnam, considering HCM city is the only city that can be considered "semi developed". I suppose to be "industrialised" today means you have a sustainable and healthy economy with a sizeable middle class living comfortably.

It also means I guess that your country has sizeable home grown companies in most important sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, automobiles, electronics and IT as well as producing relatively high quality output. I suppose a good indicator or an industrialised country is when the government plans to reduce waste and start importing $hitloads of natural resources/raw material for production.

Vietnam would be better off being a service industry, imho, but then again, competition there is also stiff. Maybe high class argriculture? iono.

When did China have free trade with the U.S? In the 1970s, while Vietnam had economic sanctions on it's war torn economy that had been damaged by war and was isolated by the world as punishment for our victory against the U.S and for our war against Cambodia. We didn't even have diplomatic relations with the U.S until 1995, and didn't have bilateral trade until 2000.

Ever since sanctions have been lifted our economy has been booming and growing faster than China if you take into account relative size.

As for how long it will take Vietnam to "industrialize"

The Danish head of the European Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi, Preben Hjortlund, said Vietnam was speeding along the same path as South Korea and other East Asian "tiger economies".

Vietnam, he predicts, will achieve its economic miracle even faster than they did.

This article was written on October 19, 2004, not too long ago. Vietnam might even achieve the eocnomic miracle of the East Asian tiger economies faster than those other countries did according to the Danish head of the European Chamber of Commerce.
