Japan alert over mystery sub

Japan's military was yesterday shadowing an unidentified submarine that had entered its territorial waters a day earlier. Officials said they had not yet discovered what country the intruder was from.

Tokyo put its navy on alert on Wednesday after the submarine was spotted off Japan's southern island of Okinawa. A reconnaissance aircraft and a destroyer were sent to follow its movements.

The Japanese media have speculated that the vessel could be Chinese, but suspicion has also fallen on North Korea.
