It's a Vietnamized version of a Khmer last name. Believe it or not, all minorities of Vietnam carry Vietnamese last names, whether they're cham, khmer, or montagnard. Carrying Vietnamese last name doesn't mean they have Viet blood.

Truong Thi May is her Vietnamese name. For convenience, most (if not all) minorities in VN adopt a Vietnamese name.

Anyway if she's mixed, do you think her birth certificate would state that she's Khmer? If she's mixed her birth certificate would most likely says she's Kinh(Viet) or mixed Viet/Kinh-Khmer.

I went to Laos and was surprised to see so many Lao people speaking Vietnamese. Mixing with Viets is like a new trend of Laos.

I'm 1/2 Viet (Kinh), 1/2 Indonesian (Javanese). It's not that rare this combination. I know a dozen of people with the same background.
