Yes but didn't the kingdom of NamViệt use the characters 南粵?
I thought the Han used to just call anyone from the south Yue, whether they were Cantonese or Vietnamese. That's why Việt Ngữ (Sino-Vietnamese for "Vietnamese language") is written as 粵語 as opposed to 越語, neh?

Hm..I think you might need to put marking on your name for that to work properly...Can someone help me to marking on my name.

Vu~ Bien Cu?o?ng < can someone put proper marking..
jonii-wanwan
Cuong, I tried converting yours into Hanji, but I need to know the actual meanings of each word of your name.
For example, my middle name Hu'~u has three different Hanji's for it. Mine has the meaning of "exist".
There are too many different Hanji's for your Vu~ surname, and I'm not sure about Bien, and Cu'o'ng has 6 different Hanji's all up.

jonni. i think Vũ means "force", biên means "border", and cương means "hard" (as opposite of nhu or soft). however, "bien cuong" together also mean "border"

You guys all have beautiful names with good omen

阮有玉 is a simple but elegant name. literally it means someone carrying a jade stone, but it also means gifted or talented in chinese because 玉 is precious.

范嘉興: 嘉 means good, 興 means prosperous, put them together you get good fortune and success. it must be from a businessman family. it's a guy's name and a very good one. but if you switch 興 with 欣, wich has the same sound but means elegant and beautiful, you get 嘉欣, a very nice name for girls. A famous female celebrity is called 嘉欣.

謝逸聰: a beautiful name from a literati family. 逸 from 飘逸 means elegant yet with a bit of wild side; 聰 from 聪敏 smart and intelligent. it's a name fitting for poets.

黄世隆 means forever good fortune in the family. likely it's from a businessman family but lacks the elegancy of 范嘉興. It's kinda raw but straightforward, like the name for someone got rich overnight. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

It's a good name nonetheless.

I think Cuong is 強 in Chinese not 疆。。。I mean I've never heard of that second character before for a person's name. It literally means Frontier/Horizon as in Xinjiang 新疆. The first character means brave.

What should I do in the case of multiple pronounciations?

In the case of my surname, 林, I see: "Lâm, Lăm, Lầm, Lim, Lom, Lùm" (I know some Chinese Lam and Lim).

My given name is 德偉 Đức Vỉ
Emperor
My surname: 張 trương
name: 偉倫 vỉ luân

So my name would be: trương vỉ luân icon_confused.gif Doesn't sound very vietnamese, does it?

Not really, considering Trương is either the first or the middle name in Viet. As for vỉ luân <-- luân is a known Viet name, how ever vỉ luân doesn't seem to match.

Lâm would be the correct one for your surname since it means forest.

Thank you for the complement. I always thought Asian names have a deeper meaning then western names. Ever since Vietnamese was romanized, I think some of us, including me, forgot the true meaning of your family, middle and given name.
It's great to see everyone's Hanji, as now I view each AF member differently as I can understand a little bit about the meaning of each name. Just a little. icon_wink.gif

Thanks, when I checked the Chu-Nom Lookup, they all meant "forest". Maybe the viet contexts are different in different romanization.
