No, look at them. Everything from their outfits to their hairstyles is heavily influenced by the Koreans/Japanese. A lot of Asian countries act like that because they've influenced by the "Korean wave" as well.

Oh you meant that. I was talkin bout the show and how they're acting.

Yeah it sucks. That's what happens when your country watches more foreign entertainment than your own. We dub everything. Even overseas the average vnamese knows more about chinese history through entertainment than vietnamese. Now since the emergence of korean dramas we're turning more korean. But we can't blame the people, entertainment has such a huge effect.

It won't last long. Vietnamese entertainment is growing at a nice pace right now. icon_smile.gif
Just hope that we won't be seeing viet guys on tv covering their mouths when laughing. eek.gif

You know why the Vietnamese movie industry is so terrible? Because of censorship. There is no room for creativity.

Censorship? I don't think it's any different as any other country unless the show/movie has to do with politics.
We just lack creativity.

What about the fact the average Vietnamese is still very poor and they just pirate most of their entertainment media.

Hmm, bad choice of words there. It's not necessarily censorship but there's a line (not just politically but socially) that can't be crossed. As a result, people are afraid to think outside the box when making movies. The same topics get beaten to death. Most movies end up focusing on the typical lame romance stories, historical epics, or societal problems and social issues. I mean historical epics emphasizing nationalism are great and all but you want to see some variety. Look at Korea, you get creative movies when the government loosens up a little and that's why a lot of their movies are internationally-known.

I think it is mostly due to our untalented and uncreative directors and producers. There's also nothing wrong with focusing on the same romance story. It's how they approach it and how they can make it different. That's where creativity is needed most or seen most. Korean dramas are mostly the same yet they're mostly different.

We have movies in the south being too commercialized and movies in the north being too artistic. The only thing we have to do is get directors from both sides to cooperate and influence each other. I'm seeing that happen through the recent dramas we've produced.

If there is censorship then Korean dramas wouldn't be famous in VN but they are. You see Korean dramas/movies on many Vietnamese tv channels all the time. The problem is that we lack creativity, professionalism, and money. We've yet to produce superstars. The reason for that is because we don't have a real entertainment showbiz. This is the first thing our actors realize when they are in countries like Korea. They immediately notice the different in effort, quality, and professionalism.

Why would Korean dramas be censored?

Btw, did Vietnamese actors attend the Wooden School of Acting?

I'm just giving you an example because you said Vietnamese films can't get creative as Korean dramas because we have censorship, but if that is true then why would we allow to show creative Korean dramas on Vietnamese tv but not creative Vietnamese dramas? It wouldn't make sense.

Wooden school of acting?

Korean dramas are not creative... and besides they don't challenge the social norms or touch upon politics so why would they be censored?

Yes, the wooden school of acting for wooden actors.

Exactly, but they are still really good (not all). Good enough for so many asian countries to be copying anything Korean. Vietnamese entertainment is just incapable right now to create something interesting enough to re-Vietnamise our people not because of censorship. That's what I was trying to say.

I don't know anything about that. Ill look into it. icon_smile.gif

Yeah I was guessing you meant something like that but I didn't know if you were kidding or not so I was assuming it was probably some school in the U.S. where the actors attended a class or two.

It's ridiculous, you should see some of the outtakes of the dramas. I don't even consider them real actors/actresses. In one of the outtakes for the drama Lap Trinh Cho Trai Tim there was someone in the background reading the script and then the actors/actresses just repeated what that person said while acting out the emotions. Lame as hell. They do this because most dramas in VN are dubbed. That's why a lot of northern actors in the south speak complete southern in the dramas and dramas are shown months or years after completion instead of showing an episode a few days or weeks after like in America.

I think this is a reason why Vietnamese entertainment sucks. No real actors/actresses. It might be because of the dubbing that makes some actors/actresses seem horrible. The singers all get famous by singing foreign songs. Dan Truong, Lam Truong, now Bao Thy, Hoa Mi etc. Their voices aren't even good except Hoa Mi.

Regarding censorship in the entertainment industry in Vietnam, here's an excerpt from a chat session with director Song Chi:
