Hmm, bad choice of words there. It's not necessarily censorship but there's a line (not just politically but socially) that can't be crossed. As a result, people are afraid to think outside the box when making movies. The same topics get beaten to death. Most movies end up focusing on the typical lame romance stories, historical epics, or societal problems and social issues. I mean historical epics emphasizing nationalism are great and all but you want to see some variety. Look at Korea, you get creative movies when the government loosens up a little and that's why a lot of their movies are internationally-known.
I think it is mostly due to our untalented and uncreative directors and producers. There's also nothing wrong with focusing on the same romance story. It's how they approach it and how they can make it different. That's where creativity is needed most or seen most. Korean dramas are mostly the same yet they're mostly different.
We have movies in the south being too commercialized and movies in the north being too artistic. The only thing we have to do is get directors from both sides to cooperate and influence each other. I'm seeing that happen through the recent dramas we've produced.
If there is censorship then Korean dramas wouldn't be famous in VN but they are. You see Korean dramas/movies on many Vietnamese tv channels all the time. The problem is that we lack creativity, professionalism, and money. We've yet to produce superstars. The reason for that is because we don't have a real entertainment showbiz. This is the first thing our actors realize when they are in countries like Korea. They immediately notice the different in effort, quality, and professionalism.
