NEW DELHI (AFP) – India launched its first nuclear-powered submarine on Sunday, officials said, underlining the military advances made by the rapidly developing nation.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh called it a "historic milestone in the country's defence preparedness" as the 6,000-tonne INS Arihant (Destroyer of Enemies) was named in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.

India is now part of an exclusive group of nations -- including China, France, the United States, Britain and Russia -- which own nuclear-powered submarines.

INS Arihant is India's lead ship of the Arihant class of nuclear-powered Fleet submarines. The 6,000-tonne vessel was built under the ATV (Advanced Technology Vessel) project at the Ship Building Centre in Vishakapatnam at a cost of US$2.9 billion. It was launched from Vishakapatnam by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur on July 26, 2009, on the anniversary of Vijay Diwas or Kargil Victory Day.

Arihant (Sanskrit for 'destroyer of enemies'; from Ari, Sanskrit for Enemy and Hant, Sanskrit for Kill or to end) is the first nuclear-powered submarine to be built by India. The launch of the INS Arihant makes India one of six countries in the world that can design, build and operate its own nuclear submarines (the others being the United States, the UK, Russia, France, and China).

Well the US helped India with its nuclear program.
Plus majority the professors in the US are Indian so it is not unlikely they go back to India with our technologies.

Btw,what is with the picture of the asian girl with two indian guys, that was out of place.
