As far as I know of, nobody is looking down on anybody in Vietnam, not on the poorer than them, not even on beggars, except for some very rich entrepreneurs or ignorant born-to-be sex tourists.
The only problem is perhaps that Cholon is more crowded an area than elsewhere, in Ho Chi Minh City, and this can be the cause of some lack of general hygiene in the streets.
I remember, you said you went to District 4? which, in some parts of it, is the refuge of the Chinese "Black Hand" gang (đảng Bàn Tay Đen, opium and prostitutes traffickers), but these are very uneducated people, and that's normal? This shouldn't mislead you into thinking that this type of attitude is generalized everywhere in Vietnam.

Actually, I think the Chinese in Vietnam is fairly good compared to Chinese in other countries. Chinese in other countries consider themselves Chinese, or the province they came from. In Vietnam, at least a lot of Chinese Vietnamese consider themselves Vietnamese even though they don't speak it. I've met a lot of Chinese Vietnamese that parents were born in Vietnam, and they were brought in the US, no connection with Vietnam, yet they still consider themselves half Chinese and half Viet. Much like yourself fujisan. Yeah, there are ungrateful bastards, but let's just say I haven't met any.
Chinese in Vietnam are always treated well. An ordinary Viet person not exposed to AF, wouldn't not have any hate for Chinese at all. Chinese should be thankful, in other SEA countries they hate Chinese with their guts.
Oh, and no one is looking down on anyone in Vietnam. As for Chinese controlling the Viet economy, you might have missed us for Thais or Malaysian. Chinese have no control in Vietnam except selling Chinese food and medicine in Cho Lon. Other Chinese are investors from Taiwan and HK.

I do not arguy with the fact that there are differnt Chinese small retail outlet in Mong Cai, because that is my hometown and I've seen it. how ever it doesn't suprise because Mong Cai is right next to China. How ever alot doesn't mean majority either.
