Eight Vietnamese Face Illegal Fishing Charges In Brunei

Bandar Seri Begawan - Eight Vietnamese men were brought to the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday to face a charge of fishing illegally in Brunei waters.
No plea has been taken. They eight are: Vo Xa, 56, Nguyen Van Them, 41, Mai Van An, 40, Nguyen Xuan Hai, 39, Le Van Be, 30, Phung Xuan Huong, 28, Nguyen Van Lang, 28, and Nguyen Ngoc Su, 23.
According to the Prosecuting Officer, Dk Hjh Hana Molina bte Pg Hj Mohammad, al i the defendants would be remanded at the Muara Police Station for a week for further investigations.
She told the court that statement from the defendants has not been taken yet and a report is also awaited from the Marine Department.
All defendants are facing a charge of using unlicensed fishing lines or locally known as 'rawai', in Brunei waters approximately 45 Nautical miles South East from the Louisa Reef.
They were caught fishing on October 13- at about 7:13 am
It is an offence punishable under Section l 1(1) of the Fisheries Act (Cap 61) that carries a fine of $2,500 and one year imprisonment.
