Two convicted criminals have been deported to Vietnam from Australia under the memorandum of understanding between the two Governments.

A man convicted for drug, theft and weapon offences was escorted on a flight from Melbourne to Hanoi yesterday.

A woman facing a 16-month jail sentence for a drug offence was deported from Sydney to Hanoi on Monday.

Australia's Department of Immigration says 55 Vietnamese nationals have been deported since the memorandum was signed in June 2001.

Viet Nam executes eight for drug trafficking
From News Reports:
Ha Noi, October 15: Five men and a woman have been executed by firing squad in central Ha Tinh province, about 350km south of Ha Noi, for drug trafficking after their pleas for clemency were rejected by President Tran Duc Luong.
Their deaths were confirmed by the province’s chief judge Nguyen Tri Tue.
Tue says the six were condemned to death in August last year after being convicted of trafficking 16.8 kilograms of heroin and 87 kilograms of opium from Laos into Viet Nam.
Two men sentenced to death at a separate trial have been executed by a firing squad in Ha Noi.
Possessing, trafficking or trading more than 600 grams of heroin or 20 kilograms of opium is punishable by death in Viet Nam and about 100 people are sentenced to death each year for breaking these laws.
