If you guys were wondering why Kidman chose VN over all of the other places, this may explain it:
http://www.tiscali.co.uk/entertainment/fil...e_kidman_biog/3"Kidman won a meaty role in the miniseries Vietnam as a gawky Sixties schoolgirl protestor who evolves into a freethinking Seventies activist, the series covering the activities of Aussie troops in Vietnam (many of them social and seedy) as well as the public and political furore back home.
Vietnam had won her an Australian Film Institute Award and an American agent and now there something genuinely meaty to work with. While at a film festival in Japan, Nicole received a call from Tom Cruise's people, asking her to come talk about his next project, Days Of Thunder, to be directed by Tony Scott. "
So she was exposed to Viet Nam from a film she did before she rose in fame.

But still, at least she remembered how she became famous, and for that, what goes around, comes around. i'd be very glad to see people go to Asia countries to help out the need of the poor people, and give the children a better future compare to unlucky people like us had to flee the countries to find our own good. I don't feel sorry for those commies, but i feel sorry for the children have to live under control of those commies.

Nicole wanted people to think that she had a kind heart and would go that far to the poorest countries to civilize the people there. Therefore, she picked Vietnam. Just like those priests who went to Africa or poorest countries to sacrifice their lives for god to help poor kids. Bottom line is she looked down on Vietnam and all the Vietnamese.

It is pro n con here, some people might think she is looking down on the VNmese, but think about it is who's willingly to do such things as her? or they just screaming about it would loose their reputation to have someone help out the poor children? and here are the children don't have a place to live, a book to read or a school to go to. As if VN officials peple do thing as her, well it is a whole different story, but they don't. It is even more insulted to me if Vietnamese kids dont' have enough education and lost for other neighbor countries. Everything have to pay for the price, but the price is reasonable, it wouldn't hurt to give it a try.

I just posted a likely reason why she chose VN of all places: she played a movie of a girl affected by the Viet Nam War. To most people, Viet Nam only brings up memories of the war, but perhaps Kidman realized Viet Nam is much more about that and grew a soft spot for the Vietnamese kids. If you look at Angelina Jolie, she went to Cambodia and adopted a little Cambodian boy....celebs aren't all superficial or fake. I would give Kidman the benefit of the doubt. I'm sure it's part publicity, but I believe she really wants to help the Vietnamese kids learn English. And the benefit is more exposure to VN and let people know that VN is more about the VN War.

I don't think it's right to say she's insulting Vietnam by chosing to go there. If so are the people in the red cross going around the world helping country in need insulting? Vietnam is poor, so we appreciate the help. Don't let ego throw people away from helping your country.

Is Nicole qualified to be a teacher in Vietnam ? What is she going to teach? English ? Australian ? What ? I assume that she was thinking that she was going to teach English. Wait a minute, number one priority for poor kids in Vietnam is to learn how to read and write Vietnamese, to learn about Vietnamese literature, Vietnamese history… English is just a secondary. She would help nothing to Vietnamese poor kids unless she donates all her money to Vietnamese education.
Most of the Whites think that all other races need them to come in to their countries and civilize them. People of color around the globe can’t survive without their help. That’s what happened in Vietnam war. The Whites decided to come in to Vietnam to “Civilize” the Vietnamese because the Vietnamese were so stupid, dumb to the point that we could not govern ourselves. The Whites came in to Vietnam to civilize, to teach us how to live. The results of that mentality were millions of death. Does Nicole have this mentality ? I think so.

hihihihi you don't like her do ya? Well, to me, it doesn't matter high school drop out or not, as long as she contribute to help it all good. I mean, when i was over there, the kids just love to learn English so bad that they couldn't find anyone to help them out (i'm one of them), luckily i had more fortunate than any other kids that i able to go to school. But then when i learned it, i need to practice but couldn't find anyone to help me out at all. Though, look at Bill Gate, he didn't have college degree, but see how many people he's bossing around. If the children get all the help they can get, it doesn't matter who teach them, they can be better than anyone of us now later on.

In the US with ‘No child left behind’ policy. Teachers are required to have teaching credential on top of bachelor degree in order to teach in public school K1-12. Teaching is not something that you can do when you have money.
Sure, Bill Gates has a lot of money and he can boss ppls around but he’s not a teacher and he will never be a teacher.
High school dropout doesn’t mean anything to an Actress but it means a lot when you want to teach someone.

I totally understand what you're saying, UglyMan, but like I said, to most Americans, they only know Viet Nam as a war. Having Kidman there will help them put a face on Viet Nam. Yes, it's unfortunate, but that's reality.
And as English is the dominant language to do business in, I think it's a positive thing kids in VN is learning English. VN's literacy rate is already high, so don't worry too much about poor kids not knowing Vietnamese.
