My impression of Singapore, it IS very clean! It's really impressive, I must say, I really like it. But apparently, it's only because they are afraid of the fines. Apparently, when they are outside the reach of Singapore's hand of law (like when they are visiting neighboring countries), Singaporeans would happily litter around

I'm a Singaporean.. Put it this way.. The places, where the government wants the tourists, to see are clean. The true cleanliness of the people can be seen in places where the tourists don't usually go. Especially the places that I have mentioned in the above post, the common areas of places where people live at night and the toilets of cheap eating places. Trust me, you would need to be extra careful when you go to the toilets as you wouldn't know if you have stepped on liquid or soilds (sometimes) which you shouldn't have stepped on.

Bhaskara is correct in the post. I have to say the result of law is successful, but the education part has failed. I say this because I have seen many incidents where parents teach their children not to do certain things as they would be fined or caught by the police, instead of teaching them the real reasons on why they should not be doing those.

Singapore is one of the cleanest and safest cities in the world. I'm embarassed to say even safer then where I live ie Melbourne. Every city will have its cheap nasty toilets, that can't be helped. But I agree that Singaporeans do it not because of a sense of civic duty but a fear of the consequences. Thats why when they go overseas, essentially they do things they can't do in Singapore.

Singapore is clean, but like my father says true cleanliness is if the people themselves do not litter, whether or not there are heavy fines. I'm not sure yet of any place that fits this bill.

But having lived herein africa for some time, i find that if it takes a fine to change the dirty habits of people, then do it! Cuz it's only when it hits them in the pockets that people make the effort to be hygenic.

You yourself say u don't know any place that is clean by itself cuz the people are clean... well.... i do know such places, villages in countrysides of Spain... their inahbitants are so proud of their villages they will automatically keep their streets clean!

But this kind of pride doesn't exist everywhere.. so if it takes a monetary fine, then so be it... my 2 sens worth

In singapore outside the streets and sidewalks are cleaner than inside of your house. lol Everyday there are cleaners that not just sweep but they scrape the tiles and pavments like its made out of precious jewels. ;p;

But I must say that our government have done a fantastic job in packaging Singapore as a clean place. Many foreigners fall for it.

been to bangkok almost every month and happen to open my eyes big big.....the thais are generally a clean lot.....go to their toilets and even on secluded areas......its cleaner than you thought

Well they do this to avoid touching the disgusting filthy toilet seat. Personally I am afraid of touching the toilet seat as well. I use the 'hover' technique when I need to defecate (or if there is toilet paper I will build a paper cushion to form a buffer between the toilet seat and my butt).
I think that this is also pretty interesting. Provided they only do this at home, I suppose it makes sense because urine droplets splash over and around the toilet - even without you noticing.



Actually, only male dogs lift up one of their legs to urinate. Female dogs squat.

A friend of mine visited Singapore several years ago and she said that Singapore is SOOOOO clean. It looks like that they even polish the leaves on the trees there!
