You can pratically learn like 70% of Vietnamese heroes when going around Saigon because street names are usually named after Vietnamese hero. The importance of each hero is also determined in the street such as Nguyen Hue, one of the most famous hero and emperor, is located in the center of Vietnam. Streets that intersect together often have heroes that are related to each other before 1975 (not only blood related, but like sometimes companions in war and peace time) . After that the communist changed many heroes street to Communist "heroes", but most of them are still intact :genius:

interesting... but why change names of ancient heroes to new heroes, older heroes are better.... they should just keep communist heroes for new streets that will be made, instead of changing them.

I also must compliment the French for such a good job planning the city. Only bad thing was they did it too early, before there were cars and before there were many people in Saigon.

In Saigon (that's Ho Chi Minh City's District 1 - Quận 1) there are quite a number of streets bearing bethanked famous French people's names cool30.gif :

Pasteur, Calmette, Yersin, the French doctors
Alexandre de Rhodes, the French linguist.

Of all HCMC,

Lê Lợi, Nguyễn Huệ, Hàm Nghi, are central but short avenues.
Lê Thánh Tôn is only a side-street to Lê Lợi.

The longuest boulevards/streets are:

Hai Bà Trưng, Pasteur (which are parallel to each other),
Nguyển Đình Chiểu (which was Phan Đình Phùng before),
Nguyễn Thị Minh Khai (which was Hồng Thập Tự before),

[and, these are my favorite heros beerchug.gif ]
Trần Hưng Đạo (which is the longest boulevard of all);
Nguyễn Trãi (which is parallel to Trần Hưng Đạo, and is the longest of all street).

Yes, but I think it 's in Nam Vang.

VC had restored name of many streets after they changed them. Pasteur is one. They're going to change HCM City to Ngo Dinh Diem City soon. (j/k you commie...)

Much, much more than that, in fact:

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Independence Palace (Dinh Doc Lap), when it was first built, in 1871, was named the Norodom Palace. It was the dwelling of the French Governer General of all the Asia Pacific. Its name was changed by Ngo Dinh Diem, then prime minister, to Dinh Doc Lap only in 1954. It became his presidential palace, until Ngo Dinh Diem was assassinated. After 30-04-1975, it was renamed Re-unification Palace (Dinh Thong Nhat), and recently was renamed again Dinh Doc Lap.

tam_ca, are you viet? how come ur sig is chinese charachters?

i don't have problem wit new communist 'heroes'. if they're important ppl in viet history, the can be honored like the rest of people.

I also like Nguyen Hue.

Also, the french signs are cool too. Pasteur is a famous scientist, I respect him. Besides, without the french, we'd probably still be linked with Chinese.
