Ancient Chinese coins found in Vietnam

www.chinaview.cn 2004-09-24 20:14:01

HANOI, Sept. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Around 30 kg of ancient Chinese coins have just been discovered in Vietnam's central Binh Dinh province, according to Vietnam News Agency on Friday.

Local construction workers detected the coins, while installinga sewage system in the province's Quy Nhon city recently, the newsagency said.

The coins, believed to belong to China's Song Dynasty (the 10th-13th century), were kept in a wooden box buried two meters underground.

The ancient coins, which are round with a square hole in the center and have embossed script on one surface, are now preserved at the province's museum. Enditem

Please go and learn some history. Vietnam gained independence in 939 AD after the collapse of the Tang Dynasty. The Song Dynasty came after the Sui, which succeeded the Tang. Vietnam between 1000 and 1400 was a small power, while China was a fat sick man of the east.

Dude, I talked back then when Annam was under Chinese rule. Of course I know independent countries issued their own currencies. sure.gif But the coin in this thread is ancient Chinese coins. So, it would make sense to talk about it from a historical perspective.

Dude, the coins were found in Binh Dinh, a southern-central province of Vietnam. Vietnam's territories from 9th - 14th centuries were at around Da Nang, which is way farther up north than Binh Dinh.

OK if I offended you I'm sorry. I was simply using the term as a metaphor to describe China as a weak giant. China has never recovered to her former glory since the collapse of the Tang Dynasty. Not until the Manchurian conquest of China in 1644 anyway. The Song Dynasty was characterised by internal weakness and external threats. China was constantly being bullied by the Jin empire and the Liao kingdom. There were many points in history of which China was called the "sick man of the east". Hence my justification for using that analogy.

Well, that's usually the case. Seems to me like that the Chinese are often ignorant about many things, including their own history, so they make them up to glorify and exaggerate their culture. So I'm not suprised other people know more about [objective] Chinese history than do the Chinese. My two cents, but worth 0.08 yuans icon_wink.gif
