Wohooo!!! I just got a call earlier today and I got the job! biggrin.gif The position is for a biomedical engineering co-op job, which is a paid internship where students work to gain experience for his chosen field of study.

The company I will be working for is Ethicon Endo-Surgery, which makes medical devices, like minimally invasive surgery tools. Getting this co-op job is really going to give me a distinct advantage when I graduate, since I would have over a year of real engineering experience. And the pay is really nice and is better than I expected...I will be making more than twice as much as my dad's starting salary, which is something all immigrant parents want to see: their kids becoming more successful than the parents in a new country.

And as the đíc tôn in my grandfather's family (i.e. I'm the first born son of my dad who is the first born son of my grandpa), all of my family place a lot of pressure on me because I am expected to be the trailblazer for all of my siblings and cousins. So getting this co-op job is really a big deal for me and my family. Woohoo again!! Be happy for your fellow Vietnamese brother biggrin.gif

Gaining paid work experience which related to your major is very important. Some of my friends got hired by the same companies they've worked as co-op students before.
Congrat to you beerchug.gif

Oh, I forgot to mention that while learning more about the company for the interview, I found out that the parent company of Ethicon Endo-Surgery (EES), Johnson & Johnson, has a facility in Viet Nam. Remember when I made a thread a while back asking how each of you would contribute to the motherland? Mine was to head a health clinic in VN. Since J&J already has connections in VN, my goal could be accomplished much easier and sooner than expected.

So does anyone live in Ha Noi? If you do, could you find more about what kind of facility that is in VN right now and possibly call them for me to get an email address so I can establish a relationship with the company there? Thanks.

I know Minikensun lives in Ha Noi, so I'm gonna shoot her a PM right now.

congrats. Lucky son of a gun. What year of college are you in? and where?
Nero874
This is my 3rd year in college; as for where, let's keep that private. As I'm a stickler for privacy, it doesn't fare well that I've seen people posting pictures of my aunt and uncle and two other people I know in real life.

That is freaky that there are stalkers like that, Nero. I understand your fear though.
Nero874
Heh...stalkers? No...just really amazing coincidences. And I don't like random people knowing more about me than they should.

Getting a co-op job at a great company definitely opens many windows of opportunities for reaching your career goals. A bright future awaits you.

Thanks Derek, I know you mean well, but there are actually many successful Southern Viets also...The Vietnamese as a whole are successful, and that includes a fair share of each region, each excelling in unique aspects.. I've personally witnessed so in my local community, other places, and in my own family as well..

As for the assumption, as much as I don't see the distinction a big deal, I can only say that Nero is only by heart, a Southerner.. But he has full right to choose whether or not to confirm that this holds true, by origin also...

Sorry, I don't mean to get into your bussiness, Nero.. but as I see it, silence does not mean yes or no, however it could be suggestive.. So just wished to clarify this..

Anyhow, congratulations again, and keep up the good work! icon_smile.gif

Hehe...I don't mind you "trying to get into [my] business." I'm a pro-democratic Vietnamese...which just happens to be Southern.

Could you find out for me what that company does (i.e. health clinic, manufacturing plant, etc)? And possibly the name of the man who has direct connections to the Johnson and Johnson in America? Thank you very much!
