They mainly choose Peking to host the next olympics cuz China has won so many medals in this and the past Olympics,..so, sorry to say this but I guess it'll take quite a time until Vietnam will be chosen..

The Greeks got to host it and it wasn't because of metals. It was because of their historical connections. Mexico City also got to host the olympic in 1968, and it's definitely was not because they won metals.

I agreed though that right now there's not much to showcase in the country. Maybe a 2 or 3 more decades of development and we can think about a serious olympic bid.

In the meantime if the Commies were to go away that woud certainly improve our chances.

Countries get chosen based on continent, infrastructure, economy and other criteria may be taken into consideration.

When it comes down to it, the country's infrastructure has to be able to support an influx of millions of people. It's pretty sad that only two asian countries have hosted the olympics.

Ok China has 10% population that lives below poverty. Vietnam has 29%.

10% of 1.3 billion is 130 million.

29% of 81 million is 23,490,000.

So there are about 5.53 times more poor people in China than in Vietnam.

The population of poor people in China is more than the population of Vietnam.

And uh, what are you talking about China not being under the poor country list? China has been called a third world country by many news sources.

That's because China is a much larger and more populated country genius . You're right China's people below the poverty level is bigger than your whole population but on the same token China's middle class is also a few times larger than Vietnam as a whole, funny how you didn't mention that one. Like you said, 10% of the people in China live below the poverty line versus Vietnam's with 29% which is almost three times as much, why not compare the proportions? Oh and to Pho-Man, you ever heard the expression "IF you live in a glass house, you shouldn't throw stones"?

Actually it is the rate that matters. With a smaller population, you'd think it be easier to control the poverty line than a larger population. Your logic makes no sense.

Not really, Vietnam was under economic sanctions and wasn't allowed to trade with most of the world until 1994. China didn't have isolation by the U.S for a long time.

Like I've said before, China is a much larger and more populated country which means of course China will have both more poor people and more middle class/rich people. I'm not diminishing anything, I am saying however that you're comparisons are based on sheer volume which is biased on your part, why not look at the proportions? Since China is 12 times bigger and about 16 times more populated, obviously China is gonna have more on both sides. Look at this way, the poor people in China outnumber North Korea's entire population by nearly 5 times, yet based on proportions which country has a better standard of living? Not that Vietnam is as poor as N Korea but I hope you get my point.

This stupid thing about this thread is when people start to compare which country is poorer. Do you guys feel comfortable dising your own country like that?

All I'm trying to show is, China isn't exactly a rich country and thus neither country should make fun of each other based on poverty status since both are considered 3rd world.

Vietnam will never host the olympics. Too crowded in my opinion. Plus the communist government in Vietnam I hear is more strict towards foreigners.

If Beijing can host the olympics, there is no reason Saigon couldn't. Politics don't matter crap, USSR hosted the 80' oympics under Brezhnev (brutal, hardcore communist), Korea during the 88' olympics was ruled by a totalitarian, militarist regime. Hell, even Germany under Hitler and the Nazis were hosts of the '36 olympics!

I'd rather have Vietnam spend more money in training her athletes and winning more medals than host the Olympics. Watching foreigners win all the medals isn't very entertaining.

Well hearing such ignorant from a Non-Viet isn't such a suprise. All the government need to do is clean up coruption and there will be more than enough corruption money to help out the athletes and build an olympic centre. This is a WIN WIN. It benifit the people, and it also benifits the country..
