Here it is
http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/eco_gdp_...a&date=1978Thailand: $540
Vietnam: $274
I think this is the first time that Vietnam ever reaches at least $1,000 in GDP Per Capita.
Congratulations to Vietnam.

^ Then you must look at what have caused VN GDP to inflate at that time.
War causes GDP to inflate. US/foreign troops salaries in VN get counted in VN GDP.

Nov 9 2008, 07:21 PM
Even US troop. But After 75 they are still better than alot of country. You can check the nationlal master source and see.

You make a good point.
Vietnam has its golden age from 11th century to 16th century (1000 to 1500).
I think Vietnam will have another golden age in the 21st century.

^ Assume your source was true, GDP could not sustain due to depletion of capital. Assume VN had high GDP per capita after the war, VN could only sustain it in the short run, but not in the long-run. It doesn't have to be VN as it could be any country.

South Vietnam economy at that time could not produce any significant products except the likes of soap, toothpaste, fish sauce and tin can etc

Even the most important commodity, rice milling and distribution was totally controlled by the ethnic chinese. It's understandable that the economy of South Vietnam will need "foreign capital injection" like American spending and aides for importing finished goods, once those capitals are gone, so does the economy

405 US dollar year in 1960 This is not South Vietnam. This source is for North Vietnam. I just asked My father cuz went to North Vietnam in 1954. "Linh Tap ket", all people who in South believe fight invaders is right then from South move to North. He said, 1960,1961,1962 is the golden age of Vietnam in 20 century. Imagined that..France 2000 a years, Canada more than one thousand a years. But North Vietnam 405 a years, China 90 buck a years at that time....Go more deeply in the economic 1960,1961,1962, I see Backy54 just a bunch of VC haters to black Vietnam reputation to benefit their own interest.

Anyway, there are just prediction. if reality in economic calculation is different. Vietnamese could reach to 1350 dollars. But 1000 and 1350 not much different. you can imagine the expenses in Vietnam for month then you know it.

Vietnam is doing better than the predictions because of high inflation and the devaluation of US dollars. It's not a notable achievement to have done a few years earlier, 2008 instead of 2010.

You make a good point.

But Northern Vietnamese were able to unite the whole Vietnam, similar to the Southern Vietnamese under Lord Nguyen Anh (Emperor Gia Long) were able to unify the whole Vietnam in 1802 and began the Nguyen Dynasty and lasted for 143 years until 1945.
I don't think the Southern Vietnamese under Viet Nam Cong Hoa were good enough to unify the whole country.
