PHNOM PENH — National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Van An and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen on Tuesday expressed their happiness at the friendship and co-operation between the two countries, ties that they would continue to develop.
The leaders made the remarks at a reception PM Hun Sen held to welcome Chairman An to the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh.
An conveyed greetings from the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, Nong Duc Manh, and President Tran Duc Luong to Hun Sen in his third-term as the Cambodian PM, believing that the new Government would carry out its strategy to bring a comfortable life and happiness to the Cambodian people.
The visiting chairman thanked the Cambodian government and its people for helping to find the remains of Vietnamese army volunteers and creating favourable conditions for Vietnamese living in Cambodia.
An said he was happy to know that Hun Sen would attend the upcoming Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM5) to be held in Ha Noi next month, noting that Hun Sen’s participation in ASEM5 would be an important contribution to the relationship between the two countries.
The Prime Minister pledged to continue to cement the relationship between the two countries and promised to work with Viet Nam to solve any issues that arise.
The host said Cambodia and Viet Nam needed to accelerate economic co-operation and use these ties as motivation to boost political relations, and those in other sectors.
He noted that Cambodia had already joined the World Trade Organisation, however, he said his country’s economy had not yet developed and Cambodian people remained poor.
"Therefore, co-operation, investment and commercial activities with Viet Nam is a must for both countries’ development,"
Regarding the ongoing search for remains of Vietnamese army volunteers, Hun Sen said this task was the responsibility of Cambodia. — VNS
