VietNamNet - Vietnamese marksmen ranked fifth with one gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the 14th ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM-14), which closed in West Java, Indonesia, on September 8.

Private fist class Ngo Tuan Anh bagged one gold and one silver medals in two men's piston shooting events.

This is the first time that Vietnamese athletes have won individual medals.

The Indonesian team ranked first; the Singaporean, second; and the Philippines, third.

At the friendship shooting contest for army chiefs of staff of the ten ASEAN member countries, major general Nguyen Nang Nguyen, Deputy general chief of Staff of Vietnam People's Army, won the first prize in rifle and piston shooting.

During the meet, the Vietnamese team met and exchanged views with other teams on training, increasing fighting capacity, and preparation for the ASEAN armies' exercises scheduled for Novermber this year, and AARM-16 in 2006.

AARM, held for the first time in Malaysia in 1991, aims to strengthen the spirit of brotherhood and solidarity among the ASEAN member countries.

ASEAN comprises Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam.
