TBILISI (Reuters) - Georgia appealed for international intervention on Monday and pulled its battered forces back to defend the capital, as Russian troops moved further into its territory, ignoring Western pleas to halt.

"The Georgian army is retreating to defend the capital. The Government is urgently seeking international intervention to prevent the fall of Georgia," a Georgian statement said.

President Mikheil Saakashvili said Russian forces had taken control of Georgia's main east-west route, effectively bisecting the country. He urged Georgians to stay home and not panic.

Moscow snubbed a plea from the Group of Seven (G7) industrial powers for a ceasefire. It said Georgia had not kept a promise to halt fighting and was shelling the Russian-held region of South Ossetia where the conflict began last Thursday.

A feeling of uneasiness pervaded Tbilisi as for the first time in four nights, city streets were largely empty, with no evening demonstration by the president's supporters.

"We are working with an international community, but all we got so far are just words, statements, moral support, humanitarian aid," Saakashvili said in a televised address. "But we need more -- we want them to stop this barbaric aggressor."

He called for an emergency session of parliament on Tuesday.

"The situation in Georgia is extremely difficult as Russia is using all its resources to occupy the country," he said, referring to what he said was the capture of a major road.

A Reuters witness saw Georgian helicopter gunships bombing targets near the South Ossetian capital Tskhinvali, sending dark smoke billowing into the air. A second reporter heard heavy artillery bombardments on the road north of the wrecked town.

Nope, I don't see any similarity. maybe smaller country vs bigger country...thats about it. From what I'm reading Georgia is the aggressor.

Dude, stop attention whoring. embarassedlaugh.gif

well, the similarity I try to point out is Georgia is starting act cocky and overconfident because it think it has the full backing of the west, especially the US.. now, the cocky little boy got beat up pretty bad /w the west it's supposedly ally, standing on the sideline doing nothing except talking and condemning while Russia ignores completely, keep on attacking. ... oh well, or should I say a preview of things to come... haha, this is classic.

Classic you said? which reminded me of a tactic that was already used by the Romans 2000 years ago. They would set up a trap, or simply make something up. And then they would say "Thou hast wronged me!", and invade the helpless neighbor. As always, in the name of peace. I think that's what China is currently doing. Slowly taking away the islands and controlling the so called South China Sea. If Vn try to claim it back or entering the water China would say "Thou hast Wronged me!" then invaded to neutralize VN in the name of peace. War with China is unavoidable since her greed is unlimited. In my opinion VN is doomed either way since China is still carry that Middle Kingdom mentality...so might as well go out in style. Ofcourse that's just my opinion.

Anyways I don't think you should compare China to Russia. Russia, I somewhat respect, China...I don't. embarassedlaugh.gif

lilzz
Now Since You bring VN into pic, which I haven't explicitly spell out.. OK.I'll do some hypothetical situation. So, you anticipate VN will have war /w CHina is inevitable. OK Now, if VN lose the war, and I would assume they sign a peace treaty and renounce the claims to those island to China.

Would you accept that in peace knowing you have fought but lost and therefore have that in writing in the treaty? The rule of the war game.

Gene
My opinion doesn't matter, I'm just some bored dude on the net. Go talk to the CPV.
lilzz
To me, its kind of simple from VN's position. Either they have the pride and go down in fighting and then lose all the islands in the peace treaty after defeat in the war. Zero Sum game.

Or, make some concessions and work with China on that. In return Vietnam will keep a number of islands and give the rest to China as a compromise. Splitting up the group of small islands in Spratley.

Zero Sum game or Compromise. That's the way I see it.

More likely zero sum game, because too many viets see compromise as sellouts.
henry00
Sorry, but those island belong to South East Asia. Chinese is originally from North, so that is non of your business.

How can you be so sure that you'll win in every war? History always proved you wrong. Take a very very close look at your history, how many times China has been invaded by small countries or just by small tribal people? Don't come here and keep stirring things like this when most of the people here are tired of your stupid facts. Just because China has risen a little bit recently and spent a lot of money buying weapons doesn't mean that's how you guys are going to win the war. Don't just jump up and down, not too long ago, Japan invaded you guys and started a "kill a Chinese" campaign. Remember??? It's also pathetic to see how you guys still try to show off at who is more willing to be violent than each other. I would say that we don't need Chinese people like you in this Viet chat. Get the hell out so that we can have a little peace.

Please let lil' zz come and play. asean.asia said his @$$ is kinda cute. kiss.gif

Don't want sound like bragging but Vietnam's navy is a joke. The best of the Vietnam's combat ships consist some sunburn anti-ship missile but those ship have poor anti-sub and anti-air coverage.
A single chinese nuke attack sub carrying YJ-62 anti-ship missile and attack cruise missile will enough wipe out the entire vietnamese fleet.

VIetnam is 10 time bigger than Georgia. We have 90 million people and Georgia only has 4 million people.
xuanzang
Don't we have enough China vs Vietnam threads ? sigh
papabearvn
lilzz is just an attention whore.

Comparing territories like those to Vietnam is such an embarrassment. laugh.gif
Places like Ukraine, Georgia were just bargaining chips between powers in the past, either between Russia & Prussia or Russian & Ottoman (or others like Tartar, etc.), they were not even reactors in my books so their inexperienced leaders have created some chaos recently. Whereas Vietnam and China are actors in their own rights albeit different in sizes, if Vietnam sneezes China will get a cold as well.
xuanzang
Georgia made a huge mistake, now they probably lose all of the dispute area's plus some other land as buffer zone, if Russians get what they want. The price for being americans dog..

You bet.

On the other hand, I support South Ossetian independence. Hopefully, Tibetans and Uighurs will soon get their independence. This can serve as an inspiring source for the H'mong at the same time, they have dreamed for a Hmongland in Guizhou for some time.

What are you thinking to compare Georgia to Vietnam?

Vietnam is more like Turkey. icon_smile.gif

I think some Chinese members in here trying to scare us...Violent is threaten to the weak; women, oldmen and pussies.

It's not working on me because I have suicidal depression problem. In fact, I don’t care what happens to me now, I have the willingness to sacrifice myself. You often hear about those soldiers drive on grenades or take a bullet to save their comrade or squad, I think they have the same problem as I do. For all we know, all those guys who won medals of honor could have have been trying to take themselves out. People might mistaken their act as heroism, but now you know.... Furthermore, I'm manly. Being manly... it’s part being a slave to peer pressure, part desire to look down on people. If you want everybody around you to think of you as a manly badass you might be tempted to take risks, do things that look hard, but it’s all easy when compared to your horror of being seen as less-than.

And that you haven't mentioned your kick-@$$ humongous balls
Gene
Speaking of by huge balls.
Sometimes I think my balls has brains of it own. I'm being controlled and infected with this deadly viral call courage and bravery. I should study modern Chinese history, move to China and live there for ten years, observing the natives, I might find a cure or treatment for my disease.
