How about a mix: ie "Con ơi, mày làm cái ǵ vây!!?" embarassedlaugh.gif
My parents don't "dm" w/ me. (Their explaination, "why, it just likes cursing ourselves!")

qwe123
how could they expect us to be polite when they themselves are rude as hell??
BrooklynCarter
what does it mean in english? lol and i'll see if they do
Hitoro
in vietnamese there is a really complex selections of pronons ( i, you, he ,she, uncle, anut, grandma, grampa......) the selections of the apropiate pronoun depends on many factors such as status, higharchy, friends, mood, emotion.......

may - you

tao - I

these two are considered really rude esspecially when a younger person speaks to an older person. you don;t hear kids coming up to their grandparents and saying "tao chao may" cause next thing you know your face will be as swelled up as banh chung.

tao and may can be used to address close friends, brothers and sisters.

tao and may can be used if one is really pissed off at another person.

when your parents luv you they address you as "con" equivalent to "my child"

when your parents hates you they address you as "may" equivalent to "your gonna get @$$ bashed by bamboo stick!"

FrankJaegerTheGrayFox
Well at least they don't call each other nigga, b!tches, and hoes like the family next door to me. sheet.

One time when I was about 11 years old, I cursed at my younger brother "tiên sư mày" and it was overheard by my mother. She called me out and said " tiên sư nó là tao đây....." Needless to say the expression was dropped from my list of to-be-used-at-home vocabulary since. laugh.gif

I have never called my older sister "chi". I just call her by name. My parents got annoyed and angry, but I have never changed, ... no matter what. I am such a rebel anyway shrug.gif

you are one already Talktohand.gif

what did you write in your old signature? Talktohand.gif

What did you write in the "nếu một mai em đi lấy chồng" thread? Talktohand.gif

And I also remember you once asked the question "How many girls have you guys f***?...I have f*** 7 girls" Talktohand.gif
XigonCongchua
as hitoro said,

Tao means "I"

Mày means "Thou, Thee, Thy"

These words are considered rude if you use it to an older person. But it's not really rude if you use it to a younger person or your friends.

Of course when you want to be polite to your friends or strangers or show respect to them, you use words like bạn (friend), cậu/chu/bác (uncle), cô/d́/mợ/thím (aunt), chị (elder sister), anh (elder brother), bà (grandmother) etc.

When you want to sound loving to younger people you use em (little sister/brother); cháu (grandchild, niece, nephew); con (child)

But when you don't have to be polite to your friends (usually for those who are closest friends) you can use mày (thou, thee) and tao (I) with them.

When you're angry at people who are younger than you, you can use mày and tao with them too.

But you're never allowed to use it to older people. It's considered rude when you do so.

No one in my family uses this type of language.

It should be discouraged and you should mentioned it to your parents.
ngocie
My parents never use this language with me or my siblings.

My MIL uses it when she gets upset.

I don't use these words because I feel they are coarse and would NEVER use them on my kids !

My partner though, he hangs around with a lot of guys on a daily basis. Swearing has become a habit for him. He used to say "du ma" alot, but then realised that it was offensive towards mothers. So now he says "du vo"... gee... thanks hubby ! icon_rolleyes.gif

How long did it take him to realize that such words are offensive toward one's mother.

I hope you're not implying that hanging out on AF Viet Chat could lead to more swearing so I better stay away from some "members" here who might be a negative influence. icon_wink.gif

Do you know some time these words were used to show affections, too? embarassedlaugh.gif (ie: "Sư mày, tối ngày chỉ lẻo mép!" after telling your grandma that she looked younger and more beautiful than the old lady who used to be her competitor in the old days)

Nigga making me feel young n sheet" " Oh I see those eyes looking at me, I know that nikka want some of this!"She may secretly likes it, don't be too hasty and jump into conclusion. icon_wink.gif

I notice that the guys don't type it out so I don't think you need to worry. icon_smile.gif

Seriously though, my partner's swearing has increased because the guys he hangs around with swear ALOT. He's always known "du ma" is offensive. It's just recently he's decided to "du vo" instead.

My kids at least know that they aren't to use that language. biggthumpup.gif My son actually cracked it with my MIL for saying "chet me". laugh.gif

I just don't like the way they sound for some reason. It just sounds uneducated and crude, even with friends. Oh well, I'd never use it, just doesn't sound right.

Wrong.

My cousins in VN are appalled whenever their friends' parents addressed them by such terms.
