The prize money for a gold is enormous by Chinese standards...thats what keeps atheletes going these days in China.
Do they get benefits even IF they don't get on the olympic team? Cause if they're just thrown out that's quite sad. No benefits, so much time taken out of their day most of their academics probably aren't on par with their non-olympic training peers unless they had tutors or something.
Its an "investment". Just like those studying at uni hoping their hard work will pay off one day, but if u quit half way, u dun get ur degree, same deal there. There is nothing to fall back on if u dun cut the mustard.
China with its massive population cannot seriously have a welfare system, so this is cionsidered a luxury.
Many kids sadly are "sold" into the Olympic squads (virtually). The kids are often either from acrobatic families or rural areas where their parents cant afford to keep them. My friend was "sold off" sadly because his single mum couldnt afford to keep him.
In a country with so many ppl, the competition is so stiff, many u see there are the cream of the cream of the cream of the cream of the cream of the cream's cream of the crop. Some many "defect" to the West to represent in stuff like Table Tennis, Badminton, Diving or Gymanstics.
