Southern Expansion. In Hoi An, the Fujian House & Canton House are still there. In Mekong Delta & Phu Quoc island as well. Fujianese & Cantonese settlers created a nice buffer for cultural assimilation. But during European colonialism, Chinese in South East Asia exploited it and became middle-men in the system, it was then that the problem happened.

Yeah, kinda like that, uninhabited land during Southern Expansion. The Cantonese & the Fujianese are generally less involved in politics (no offense to you guys) as it was proven in history, among many Yue groups, only Lac Viet people are able to retain their identity although there were still connection between these groups in the past. The Funanese & Chenla people viewed the Cantonese & Fujianese settlers as harmless citizens but the cultural assimilation process could still be achieved. One prime example is Mạc Cửu.

From what I talked to him about on AF over a year ago, he seemed more identifiable with Vietnamese culture. People change. All I'm saying is there are alot of Chinese viets out there. Targeting minorities such as Chinese is not healthy for any society.

@papavietnam: that is why there are always more Chinese in South Vietnam than in North Vietnam, many provinces in South Vietnam were founded by the Fujianese or Cantonese but then they ceded those land to Lord Nguyen and became Viet citizens.

I don't know what you mean by targeting minorities but Vietnam has 53 ethnic minorities and Vietnam even has affirmative action favoring ethnic minorites as well. Vietnam even reserves a television channel for ethnic minorities to air programs in their languages. There is no law in Vietnam that specifically targets ethnic Chinese or any other ethnic minorities.

Comparing how the ethnic Chinese have to live behind electric wired fence with armed guard in Phillipines in fear of getting kidnapped or getting all kind of unjust acts in Malaysia and Indonesia, ..you can bet that the ethnic Chinese in Vietnam along with Thailand are living in the safest haven in Southeast Asia

but in the past 300 years or so the Chinese constantly migrated to Vietnam...life in China was very chaotic...just read the novel "Chân Trời Cũ" by the Chinese/Viet poet/novelist named Hồ Dzếnh and you'll see.

I wasn't taking all of vietnam into context. I was directing my statements to the poster who made that ignorant comment. From my knowledge, Chinese in Vietnam have nothing to fear.

I think the Vietnamese who can speak Cantonese well are the ones who have Cantonese blood. Full Vietnamese don't speak Cantonese well unless they marry a Cantonese.
