arent you ethnic chinese from vietnam? me and most of my friends are the same, and we all speak vietnamese just as well as cantonese

well my viet is crappy...just had an ex gf who was viet and we were kind of serious. so her parents INSISTED i took the time to learn vietnamese....and whatever viet i learnt was from that.

at home i speak teo chew/chao zhou hua/chiu chow wah and cantonese....my grandparents didnt allow any vietnamese in the home.

your grandparents are weird, they shouldnt have stay in vietnam then

I agree, assimilate into our culture or get out of our country

my family and ancestors assimlated, we helped suppress at least 3 rebellions for Le/Trinh/Nguyen Dynasty

Wow, you're from a military family too? Not bad.

I am fluent in speaking Viet, Saigon accent. No white accent when i speak, i sound like i was born there according to basically all the grown-ups my parents know and all my cousins who came to Canada from Saigon.

I can't read or write, and that's because the Viet school's here suck, plus i never had the chance to enroll. If only the programs were more widespread and not so far away from us when i was smaller.

Hey, i can still guess words though. Atleast when i looked at the title i knew it said "Does anyone here know Viet". But when i read it's purely guess and check, i don't know how to use the tone-marks due to NO TRAINING.

What does "vay" mean in that sentence?

It's just an add-on to a question.


Anyway, my Chinese side has always been fabric traders as far as I'm concerned... since the early establishment and growth period of Saigon.

i can read a little of viet.. but i can't write very well..
but i speak pretty well..

I think people should start being more specific about what they mean by "speaking pretty well." I personally think I don't speak all that well, but to others, it may be well or it may be crappy.

Basically, my working vocab is enough to be conversational, but whenever I want to debate, make a joke, speak about topics that has its own jargon, or anything beyond simple convesrations, that's when my current skill level fails me. As for my accent, I usually get it right, but I have a slight accent...which is greatly magnified when I talk with friends, but not so bad when I talk with my parents.

I think many people who can speak Vietnamese but can't read/write well is more like me when it comes to speaking. I really don't consider myself being able to speak well, so if you're like me, you probably shouldn't say you can speak well either since your skill level is at only basic conversations. And that's why you would want to improve!
