Ban đầu, Thy cũng không rõ nhạc đồng quê là gì nữa, mà nghe Tuấn nói thì Thy nghĩ nó là dân ca về ba miền- thường có tính cách vui và nhịp nhàng hơn là nhạc quê hương. Nhạc quê hương thì nói về cả non nước, và lời nhạc có vẻ thơ và vân chương hơn, điệu nhạc nghiêm và chậm hơn một chút..

Hello Thy, Tuấn ở Minnesota. Khi Việt kiều về Việt Nam, nói chuyện gì họ củng sẻ biết mình là Việt kiều hết, trừ khi mình ở đó hơn 3 tháng thì sẻ ảnh hưởng tiếng địa phương và da đen lần lần và đồng hóa với người ở đó thì không còn biết Việt kiều nửa đâu.

Interesting! very good way to classify the two. But I've never heard of anyone classified nhac into "nhạc đồng quê". Maybe I have heard of "nhạc quê hương"....hmmm but đồng quê...only Dai_Viet can come up with the classification I guess

Actually I have heard people mentioned "nhac" as that fall into categories like

Traditional:
- nhạc dân ca (folksongs from informal, rural life settings. Maybe this is what Thy is explained. With regard to Dân ca music, it varies from region to region but all in all it is like what Thy explained. Hát ru in the north, hát ru con in the central, and hát đưa em in the south)
- nhạc quản hò (like minikensun mentioned something about Bắc Ninh quản hò v.v)
- nhac lể or hát hội (ritual, religious, and ceremonial music)
- hát cải lương(south)/hát bội(central)/hát chèo(north) (court musical or theatrical music from different regions)
- ca trù (the kind that Ngọc Hạ on PBN sing..I think it is from the northern region)
- etc..

Modern music:
- nhạc trử tình
- nhạc thính phòng
- nhạc truyền chiến

- etc...amongst others


Anyway, here are my favorite list of dân ca or folk songs that I have.

Nero874, thank you for all those mp3 files. I hope it's ok to put some of them up on the Monsoon-Country website. I'll swap out that "non-stop" Quê Hương music with the real thing, although I have to say I've gotten to like that cha cha cha rhythm.

It's been quite a while since I first asked about Vietnamese country music on this forum and it's nice to finally get some good pointers. I'm convinced there must be some young bands in Vietnam doing funky stuff with the old country music, just like they're doing in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. Maybe someone will come across it and if so, I hope they'll be nice enough to share.
