VietNamNet- On September 1 the State Bank (SBV) will issue the new VND100,000 polymer banknote to protect against counterfeiting.

Aside from long standing security means, the new note will be protected from counterfeit by employing new tags, including the appearance of colourless, latent, luminescent and embossed images, which are easily for users to check while remaining almost impossible to counterfeit.

The new banknote is 144x65mm in size, and is green in colour. One face bears the Socialist Republic of Vietnam legend, along with the national insignia, a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh, its face value of VND100,000 both written and numerical, along with traditional and modern patterns.

The reverse face bears the words State Bank of Vietnam, and a landscape picture of Van Mieu (Temple of Literature) – Quoc Tu Giam, its face value of VND100,000 both written and numerical, and traditional and modern patterns.

According to the SBV, the issuance of the new polymer banknotes is a double edge sword, fighting against counterfeit money and protecting against wear and tear. Polymer banknotes last significantly longer than their paper predecessors.

The outgoing VND100,000 notes have been the most prone to forgery of Vietnam’s monetary denominations. While becoming obsolete, the old brown banknotes will still retain their value when the new breed is released into the wild.

SBV recommendations
The new polymer banknotes have enhanced endurance and remain cleaner than the old paper banknotes. However, the notes are not heat-resistant, and may be deformed by exposure to high temperatures.

SBV recommends the notes be kept flat, not folded, crumpled or creased. Crumpled banknotes can be smoothed out by a light pressing. Do not iron the polymer notes, as they will melt.

Mặt trước gồm: dòng chữ Cộng Hòa Xã Hội Chủ Nghĩa Việt Nam, quốc huy, chân dung Chủ tịch Hồ Chí Minh, mệnh giá 100.000 nghìn đồng bằng chữ và số, hình trang trí hoa văn dân tộc và hoa văn lưới hiện đại.

Nội dung mặt sau gồm: dòng chữ Ngân hàng Nhà nước Việt Nam, phong cảnh Văn Miếu – Quốc Tử Giám, mệnh giá 100.000 nghìn đồng bằng chữ và số, hình trang trí hoa văn dân tộc và hoa văn lưới hiện đại.

Ngân hàng Nhà nước Việt Nam cho biết, tương tự như đợt phát hành tiền mới đợt 07/12/2003, việc phát hành đồng tiền polymer 100.000 đồng mới cũng nhằm mục tiêu nâng cao chất lượng, nhất là khả năng chống giả của đồng tiền VN.

Hiện nay, đồng tiền 100.000 đồng in trên giấy cotton đang bị làm giả nghiêm trọng với kỹ thuật khá tinh vi và số lượng ngày càng gia tăng. Đồng tiền mới nhằm hạn chế và đẩy lùi đồng tiền giả nhằm bảo vệ lợi ích hợp pháp của người sử dụng.

Thống đốc Ngân hàng Nhà nước Việt Nam Lê Đức Thúy nhấn mạnh: “Phát hành và lưu thông các đồng tiền mới, có chất lượng cao là biện pháp chống tiền giả hữu hiệu mà các nước vẫn áp dụng, và là nghiệp vụ bình thường của Ngân hàng Trung ương. Việc phát hành đồng tiền 100.000 đồng polymer không ảnh hưởng đến tình hình lưu thông tiền tệ và lơi ích hợp pháp của mọi tổ chức cá nhân. Đồng tiền giấy cotton 100.000 đồng hiện nay vẫn có giá trị lưu hành song song với đồng tiền mới.

Khuyến cáo của Ngân hàng Nhà nước
Đồng tiền polymer 100.000 đồng mới có độ bền cơ học cao hơn và sạch hơn đồng tiền giấy truyền thống nhưng chịu nhiệt kém hơn. Thực tế đã có một số trường hợp người sử dụng sơ ý để đồng tiền polimer tiếp xúc với nguồn nhiệt cao (bàn là, lửa...) làm đồng tiền bị biến dạng. Ngân hàng Nhà nước khuyến cáo người sử dụng lưu ý nên giữ phẳng đồng tiền polymer, không gấp và xiết mạnh các nếp gấp trên đồng tiền; không vò đồng tiền, khi bị nhàu có thể làm phẳng bằng cách trải phẳng và ép nhẹ; không dùng bàn là để là tiền; không để tiền tiếp xúc với nhiệt độ cao.

I do not understand VN's attempts to thwart forgery by switching over to these new polymer bills. You can switch money around all you want but when it comes down to it, who has control over the security of VN's money??

The Austrailians do! VN doesn't have it's own mint. It relies on Australians to print their money for them! The Chinese have been forging the new polymer 50,000 and 500,000 VND bills ever since they came out. I remember the stats being that 1 in 6 of every 100,000 VND bill is a fake. Not to mention most VN nationals do not trust the government issuing new currency all the time. Remember the money exchange programs 10-20 years ago?

Vietnam will be printing the next lot of polymer notes in Vietnam as in accordance with an agreement between the Vietnamese and the Aussies. So no bull$hit such as "Australia controls Vietnam" etc. And besides, that's not how the world works I'm afraid.

Anyway, I'll ask my rellos to send me some of those new notes when a family friend comes back to Australia from Vietnam.

Well, I'm not saying Austrailia controls VN. I'm saying that VN does not have direct control over their own currency, which is true. Imagine what it would be like if the US contracted another country to print it's dollars. Do you think people would believe in the dollar as much?

Believe it or not, there are a number of people who do not like to use or accept the new plastic notes because they fear they're fakes. They don't have the public education programs like the US does to educate the people of new security features and what to look for.

No wonder Viets are good at math. With all these big numbers, a trip to the candy store, is more then what a 5th grader from America can handle.
