Viet Nam's athletes have almost completed training for the Olympics and are raring to go.
Taekwondo star, Nguyen Van Hung, the country's greatest medal hope, has a hairline fracture in his right hand he sustained during training in Iran last week. But he is expected to be fully fit for Athens.
The Viet Nam Taekwondo Federation general secretary Truong Ngoc De said the plaster has come off Hung's finger and he has resumed light training.
The squad comprises 11 athletes in all, Viet Nam's largest ever to a world-level event, who will compete in eight disciplines. Most of them will be making their Olympic debuts.
Canoeist Doan Thi Cach became the last member to make the team as her entry was accepted by the International Canoeing Federation last week. She will compete in the women's 1000m, in which she clocked 1.46 minutes to finish third at the Olympic regional qualifiers in Japan in May.
Woman-weightlifter Nguyen Thi Thiet also booked a berth to the Games recently after waiting for the International Weightlifting Federation to decide her case; she too had finished third in the 63kg in the qualifiers.
She is training in China and will return home later this month, a week before the team leaves for Athens.
Hung and the other Taekwondo star, Nguyen Quoc Huan, were the first two to qualify for the Games after finishing second at the Asian qualifiers in Bangkok in early February.
Nguyen Manh Tuong will be the only shooter for Viet Nam. After gaining direct entry for winning five gold medals at last December's Southeast Asian Games, Tuong has just finished a month's training in Germany. He dreams of success at the Olympics which he said is "the pinnacle of every athlete's career."
Runner Le Van Duong will participate in the men's 800m racing, after hitting top form to clinch gold at the Summer Invitational Athletics Meet in Hong Kong two weeks ago.
Table tennis player Doan Kien Quoc, who will don Viet Nam colours for the first time at the Olympics, warmed up by playing top regional players at the Golden Racket International championship which finished in Ho Chi Minh City last Sunday.
The other three berths have gone to rowing duo, Nguyen Thi Thi and Pham Thi Hien, who finished third at the Asian women's qualifiers, and swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet who got a direct entry for holding the national breaststroke record and participating in the Barcelona world championship.
The team, led by vice president of the National Olympic Committee, Nguyen Hong Minh, will leave for Athens on August 8.
Viet Nam's best showing in an Olympics was the silver won by woman Taekwondo artist, Tran Hieu Ngan, at Sydney in 2000.
