So what are some of the New Year's superstitions?

Here are some Vietnamese superstition:

- Be careful with the first person who walks into your house on the first day of New Year. If that person is going to have bad luck, your whole family is going to have bad luck too, and vice versa.
- In general you don't want people who are having bad luck to walk into your house during the first 5 days of New Year because the bad luck may spread embarassedlaugh.gif You want people who are having good luck to come to your house, like someone who's just won a lottery embarassedlaugh.gif
- You have to pay off all the debts before New Year. Or else your family money's will be draining off in the coming year.
- Try to see a unicorn during New Year. It's good luck (that's what unicorn dance is for) embarassedlaugh.gif
- Don't sweep your house during New Year. It's bad luck.

Basically Vietnamese people believe that anything happens during 5 days of New Year is a sign of what's going to happen over the rest of the year. biggrin.gif

Canister I know you're kidding and you don't mean to be disrespect but seriously it's very inappropriate to address older people like that. I've talked to you about this in the other thread. You called me "dữ như chằng", well I'm not "dữ như chằng" I just want show you how to address in a proper way so people won't think you're a spoiled child. Even if it's the internet you still shouldn't address older people like that because, believe me, they'll get offended and they'll judge you and your family.

I heard that Qung people use tao and my/mi a lot. But seriously it's very inappropriate here.

I didn't think it was that big of a deal, I am very polite in real life. Should I refer to myself as tớ? I think referring to myself as em is too cheesy .

How much money do you guys typically get?

I remember those days when I used to get the little red envelopes during Chinese New year. I guess I'm too old for that kind of stuff now. bawling.gif

You serious, 5-10 dollars? I used to get a bit more when I was little but I end up losing most of it gambling. icon_neutral.gif

You can refer to yourself as "con". If you say "tao" you'd get slapped instead of money.
