is it like kwok or c@ck?

are you vietnamese? if you are, then you should know how to pronounce it. but, it looks like your not, so ask a vietnamese person. i am vietnamese myself and i know how to pronounce it, but i just don't know a good way to get you to understand... xin loi...

Ha. My husband and my son happens to have that quoc in their name.

It means country and we say coo (like in cool without the l sound) and add oar at the back. Do not pronouce the C sound at the back. It should not sound like quock. Just soft coo-oar.

That's the best imitation I could get. Honestly, I call my son QUOCK, to the consternation of my Vietnamese husband.

right now i can't think of any words in english that rhymes with it, so i'll try write it in english instead: Quoak. Notice the english word "oak" in the word Quoak. Now pronounce the word "oak" and combine it with "Qu."

to get more presise, pronounce the "Qu" like a K. for example, the word Kick and Quick. You pronounce the K with a heavier tone in the word "Kick", right? where as in "Quick", the K is prolong.

using this i think you should be able to pronounce the word with 85-90 percent accuratecy, which is better than c@ck.

Also the word "Quoc" in different cases (noun, adjective, verb) can also mean differnt things as well: quo^'c da^t = dig soil; quo^'c Ky` = national anthem; Anh Quo^'c = English Country (Aka England).

If you want to say it the Northern way, you'll say Quoc as "kwok". If you want to say it the Southern way, you'll say "wuok" (I think). Whichever way, Kock (as in the American English word for the universally known male appendage) is not right. Welcome to globalization, dude: now, we have to worry about how our names sound to non-Vietnamese speaking people.

For the sake of their sanity and/or as a matter of cultural survival, those of us who have been given names like Dung, Quoc and Phuoc or Bich should consider either changing them or adding a Western first name or nickname: they are beautiful names in Vietnamese but when mangled in American English, they mean something totally different.

Agreed. In addition, an American first name of "d!ck" appended to a Vietnamese first name of "Hung" would be a most unfortunate combination. "Hung d!ck: you got yourself admitted to Harvard? You lucky stiff!"
