^ As an overseas Vietnamese... Damn, I wish we could be like the current Singapore right now--heck in 20 years even. But Singpore is an island nation, so I'm not sure how Vietnam which is close to the size of California but with ~83 million people, can closely follow Singapore's path.

Vietnam does have a lot of natural resources: Coal, Aluminum, rice, fish...

I guess they want to model the 'socialist' capitalist model that SG leaders have done for their economic development. We have a capitalistic economic system that sees alot of intervention by the government. In fact, the SG elites probably own the entire corporate balance sheets!!!

It would be very hard to replicate Singapore's model for Vietnam because Singapore is after all, much smaller--a city-state. Singapore being located right in the midst of the Malacca Strait where roughly 1/4 of the world trade flows through has it much easier than Vietnam. But nevertheless, I think Singapore is a good political model for VN, but not a economic one.

It's the way Singapore government handling the country that should be emulated, no matter how large the country is. Because actually the larger the country, the more resources it has icon_wink.gif

I think at the rate Vietnam is progressing right now, it would become like Korea or Taiwan in the next few decades.

Chunghwa Telecom May Buy Stake in Vietnam Carrier as Sales Slow

By Tim Culpan

Jan. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telephone company, is in talks to buy a stake in a Vietnamese carrier as sales stagnate in its home market.

``We hope we will have something in the first half,'' Chairman Ho-chen Tan said in an interview in Taipei on Jan. 7, declining to name the target company. ``It's still in the negotiation process.''

Expanding into Vietnam, Southeast Asia's fastest growing economy, may help Ho-chen spur growth after Chunghwa's sales in the last four years failed to exceed 2 percent in a market where phone subscriptions exceed the island's 22.9 million population. Japan's NTT DoCoMo Inc. and Singapore Telecommunications Ltd. have also said they're interested in investing in Vietnam.
