Thu Thiem bridge project gets a nod
The Government has approved a US$57.4 million project to develop a bridge spanning the Saigon River to link Ho Chi Minh City's centre with Thu Thiem peninsula.
Nguyen Xuan Giang, general director of Transport Engineering Design Incorporation (TEDI), said the bridge will be built between Saigon New Port and Ba Son Shipyard.
The six-lane Thu Thiem bridge will be 766m long and have a boat clearance of 10m above the water level.
The city plans to use its budget to cover the construction cost and will recover the cost through tolls once the bridge is open to traffic.
HCM City Vice Mayor Nguyen Van Dua said the city hopes the bridge will be open to traffic by April 2005 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of national reunification.
The bridge is expected to help the development in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area and ease traffic congestion in the city's eastern area, he said.
A running tunnel through the Sai Gon River, like the bridge to link these areas, is also under consideration.
The city plans to build another 12 bridges across the Saigon River plus the existing five, which are often congested during rush-hour.
