Thu Thiem bridge project gets a nod

The Government has approved a US$57.4 million project to develop a bridge spanning the Saigon River to link Ho Chi Minh City's centre with Thu Thiem peninsula.

Nguyen Xuan Giang, general director of Transport Engineering Design Incorporation (TEDI), said the bridge will be built between Saigon New Port and Ba Son Shipyard.

The six-lane Thu Thiem bridge will be 766m long and have a boat clearance of 10m above the water level.

The city plans to use its budget to cover the construction cost and will recover the cost through tolls once the bridge is open to traffic.

HCM City Vice Mayor Nguyen Van Dua said the city hopes the bridge will be open to traffic by April 2005 to coincide with the 30th anniversary of national reunification.

The bridge is expected to help the development in the Thu Thiem New Urban Area and ease traffic congestion in the city's eastern area, he said.

A running tunnel through the Sai Gon River, like the bridge to link these areas, is also under consideration.

The city plans to build another 12 bridges across the Saigon River plus the existing five, which are often congested during rush-hour.

Riddle: do you know how many bridges there are in your town of residence??? Ex. Paris: 26 bridges; Lyon: 31 bridges (2 rivers)

Link to follow up the construction of all bridges in the world in 2005, including the bridges in Vietnam. http://www.structurae.net/en/chrono/2005.cfm

HCM City paves way for Thu Thiem Tunnel

VNECONOMY updated: 01/03/2004

Work on the Thu Thiem Tunnel or Package No4 of the East-West Highway Project under the Sai Gon River will begin in late June, said a city official.

Le Qua, deputy director of project management, said site clearance for construction in Districts 1, 2 and 4 will be completed by March.

The city has also mapped out a plan to adjust traffic patterns in the areas affected by the project.

The tunnel will link the centre city to District 2, where the new Thu Thiem urban centre will be located.

The contract for construction was approved by the Prime Minister on February 19.

Japanese contractor Taisei Corportation won the VND2.23 trillion (US$142 million) contract.

The city has promised to hand over the cleared site to the contractor three months ahead of the ground-breaking date, said Huynh Ngoc Si, director of project management.

The Thu Thiem Tunnel will be 1.6 km long and 32.5m wide, and will have six lanes and two emergency lanes.

The tunnel is the first section of the HCM City East-West Highway Project to get off the ground.

Also part of the East-West Highway Project will be the new Khanh Hoi Bridge, recently approved by the People’s Committees of District 1 and District 4, the Department of Transportation and Public Works, the Department of Culture and Information and Ho Chi Minh City Museum.

The city authority said it will not affect the view of the Nha Rong Wharf historical site.

A bridge isn't enough for mass transportation in a big city like Saigon.

Dong Nai comes first in FDI race (27/07/2004)

Nhon Trach 3 IP in Dong Nai province.

The southern province of Dong Nai continues to lead the country in foreign direct investment (FDI), both in terms of new investments and funds injected into existing projects.

Dong Nai's 94 FDI projects brought in a total capital of US$505.5 million in the first half of this year, US$55 million higher than the province's target for the whole year, accounting for a third of the US$1.63 billion invested nationwide over the same period, announced the provincial Department of Planning and Investment.

Dong Nai has seen the arrival of 49 new FDI projects worth US$260.5 million, while another US$245 million was pumped into 45 existing projects.

The Sun Steel Company topped the list, adding US$132.5 million. Other projects with significant capital increases include Daewoo Textile Company in the Loteco Industrial Park (IP), which doubled its capital to US$24.6 million, and the Taiwan-owned animal feed producer Harvest Industrial Company in the Nhon Trach 3 IP, which also doubled its capital to US$10 million.

"The fact that foreign investors in Dong Nai IPs want to expand their production proves they are performing well and have faith in our new investment policies," said Vo Van Mot, chairman of the provincial People's Committee.

Mot and other provincial leaders also attributed the province's success to their "fast-track approach" to infrastructure development, the availability of land for lease and improved administration.

"Key factors helping the province's IPs lure more investment are the creation of a 'one-stop' service for those who have existing projects and the availability of a well-developed infrastructure," said Phan Thi Hong Cuc, deputy head of Dong Nai IP Authority.

Foreign investors said they intended to capitalize on Dong Nai's proximity to Ho Chi Minh City and also mentioned the benefits the HCM City - Long Thanh -Dau Giay expressway would bring. There are also plans to build an international airport at Long Thanh.

"We decided to invest in the Long Thanh IP because it is very near to HCM City and to rent land only costs between US$19-22 per square metre, much lower than city prices," said Jack Tsai, general director of the Taiwanese-invested Jumo Textile Vietnam Company.

I think you want to know the name of the town where the bridge is being built?

it's Thủ Thiêm. It's District 2 of Saigon. If you have a map of Saigon, this town is facing Bến Bạch Đằng, Q1.

As for Tỉnh Đồng Nai, it's the province after Districts 2 and 9. OK, I've found an big regional online map (750x1089 pixels, 205 KB), please right-click to download it.
