Vietnam sentences businessman to death for fraud
HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - A businessman who defrauded 265 people in an elaborate real estate scam has been sentenced to death, state-controlled media reported Saturday.
Tran Van Giao, 34, director of the privately owned Dong Phuong construction company, was given the death penalty at the end of a 10-day trial on Friday after being convicted of defrauding 265 people of 27 billion dong (US$1.7 million), the Communist Party mouthpiece Nhan Dan (People) said.
According to the verdict in a Ho Chi Minh City court, from 1996 until his arrest in November 2001, Giao swindled multiple people who bought into his property development projects, the newspaper said.
His tricks included selling one property to many clients, the newspaper said.
Giao's deputy, Nguyen Van Trung, was sentenced to 12 years in jail on the same charges, it said.
The court ordered them to pay back the money they had taken, it said. - AP

Well I don't think Vietnamese taxpayers should pay from a fraudster's food and accomodation for 30-40 odd years. Ah well just shoot him instead. Oh wait, the judge has decided

A swift and effective means of dealing with corruption. Then again, is the fear of death enough to overpower human greed?

I don't think so.
I'm sure this is not the first time someone was given the death penalty for fraud, and yet it happens again and again. It's not effective.

Thing is, to a government a white collar crime such as mass fraud or embezzlement hurts society and them more than a bunch of druggies killing each other.

Especially moving women and children! If I ever become the chief of the entire Vietnamese police department, those bastards are not moving 1 Vietnamese soul across the borders.

More power to the government. I have no problem with capitol punishment as long as they are absolutely sure the accused is guilty. It would be a shame if he wasn't. And hope they would get rid of more of these bastards that are slowing the rocovery of the country, and hope they would get rid of those corrupted officials. Vietnam - corruption - bribery + transparency = a beautiful piece of land no matter what system we're under or what rights we have.
I have no problem with paying extra money at the airport in VN as long as the money goes to the gov't not the stupid guard that got there through connection. I have no problem to pay extra for the same thing locals get for lower price since I am a tourist, if the gov't go out and say that tourist should pay more, but since they don't, paying more is just so I'm being ripped off and further promote dishonesty and further the gap between honest people and dishonest people.
Vietnam needs an ethic cleansing.

I agree with the execution of those who commit crimes such as #1, #2, #4 somewhat to #3 depending on degree as well as # 5 depending on degree as well as type. If you're trafficing humans IN OR OUT of Vietnam in any way illegally to abuse or use those people, then you should be executed on the spot (like how some people are tricking innocent Viet girls into thinking they are going to Cambodia to be maids then end up being forced into prostitution and locked up in a dark room without any human contact). But if you're trafficking drugs, that's a different story for me. As long as the drugs are leaving Vietnam, it's all good. Haha

Less drugs for the Viet druggies to use. But trafficking drugs in, execution is needed, because you are poisoning our people.

Scums of society should be executed and their property seized and given to their victims. Imprison them will only waste the valuable state resources otherwise used for national development.
