So wat do you say? I prefer Saigon if I can ... since my mother (who's chinese) and my granny (same) lived in Saigon. What do YOU say?
ManlyMan
I would have to say Saigon. But I'm sure the young vietnamese borned after the war don't care what I think.
Ek-ek
Hard to choose since I have not went to Vietnam! But from what some of the people had experienced, They prefer Saigon over Ho Chi Minh According to them its much easier to pronounced. Aside from that they prefer visiting Saigon than Hanoi because they liked the weather and hospitality of the people there!
F.L.A.
Maybe necause ok a lot of American movies
about Vietnam war, I always think and
say Saigon

Actually, before the vietnam war it was Saigon, but its name was changed after the South's loss.
Saint Legends
How come?
Ek-ek
Nationalism
Saint Legends
Do both names translate into anything in English?
Cevilgenius
Ho Chi Minh City = "city of the guy whose name is Ho chi MinH" icon_wink.gif N Saigon, nope.
Ek-ek
No, They are different!

Saigon sounds and writes just like our Sai Kung in Kowloon, Hong Kong. I always laugh about it. My husband has a Saigon and we have a Sai Kung.

Sai means West but I am not sure what Kung means. The Chinese dictionary says tribute, revenue, superior, to present as tribute, to advance, to levy a tax.
Nam
doesn't really matter wat its called now just dont talk bout it in vn

cause the cops hear ya or n e body tells bout it then u can go to jail ther cause

they'll think ur gonna start a war again
Cevilgenius
Yes... but we don't live in vietnam do we? Well, I dunno about you..... and still I want to know what people refer to it as.
Colordevil
Well, i perfer the name Ho Chi Minh City, it's offical, easy to remember, and i don't feel like using Saigon, hehe, jk
Cevilgenius
COMMUNIST!!! j/k

anyway I stay with Saigon because my family and my friends still stick to the old government

EDIT: friends do not include color right now
Colordevil
Well, based on the popularity, most people throughout the world call it Ho Chi Minh City, i do not really care actrually
Cevilgenius
Thats because its politically correct... the victor chooses the name and its name is Ho Chi Minh... however I feel that many people that ran away from the communists still call it Saigon
Colordevil
Not too many of them, most of the people in the world did not, hehe
Cevilgenius
Yeh... victor is always right and loser is forgotten... the destiny of war

Still... Vy calls it Saigon, my family calls it Saigon... who else?
Colordevil
Well, Saigon= Ho Chi Minh City, so makes no differences
Cevilgenius
A name can mean everything.... names are what make things different
Colordevil
um.............still, why such big difference, to me, personally, i mean i do not care as long i know both names and meanings
Cevilgenius
Politics.... the fate of the world could hang on a name
Colordevil
i said for me, Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City, not much differences
supernovasp
saigon, saigon, saigon.....

saigon name's origin is actually khmer... because it used to be cambodian land...
Colordevil

Cevilgenius
Yeh... and it also sounds like Sam Cheung or something

still wat do you call it
Colordevil

If it's historical then you would call it Saigon.. now if you want it politically correct you would call it Ho Chi Minh City.

WhoAmI maybe I missed it but what do you call the city?
WhoAmI
i refer to the city both ways. sometimes i call it Ho Chi Minh City and sometimes i call it Sai gon. it depends i guess.

actually i thought khmer called it something else but vietnamese couldnt pronounce it so the viets called it Saigon. ???

Ho Chi Minh is Hu Zhi Ming in Chinese

There are two good Vietnamese restaurants in Houston called Saigon and none called Ho Chi Minh, so I chose Saigon.
Cevilgenius
I think they're called Saigon because they probably moved to the US for fear of communist oppression... I thought you supported communism... confused.gif.

Anyway Saigon is the traditional name which most of the vietnamese here use... i think.

I support communism? When did I say that? I thought you were Chinese, don't you know the symbol in my signature?

Yes, Saigon is more cultural while Ho Chi Minh is more political.

It's silly to expect Ho Chi Minh city to have songs written about as Saigon has. The name Saigon has been around for hundreds of years while Ho Chi Minh is barely three decades old.

Whoever voted for 'Ho Chi Minh City'.
He's a viet cong! embarassedlaugh.gif

Actually it was me....

I prefer saigon because most companys in vietnam would use saigon like Saigon Water Park and Saigon Beer. I have not seen anywhere in HoChiMinh City where people have shops with Ho Chi minh city included in their shop name.

I just got home from vietnam about 5 weeks ago. :/

Again, you can not compare the popularity between Saigon and Ho Chi Minh like that. Saigon is the historical name of the city while Ho Chi Min, however political it might be, is new.

Why isn't Prey Nokor a choice? cry2.gif

I'm assuming it's because Prey Nokor isn't a Vietnamese name, but a Khmer one. Both Saigon and Ho Chi Minh are Vietnamese names for the same city.

I don't think it was intended to offend Khmers icon_smile.gif
