Hard to choose since I have not went to Vietnam! But from what some of the people had experienced, They prefer Saigon over Ho Chi Minh According to them its much easier to pronounced. Aside from that they prefer visiting Saigon than Hanoi because they liked the weather and hospitality of the people there!

Saigon sounds and writes just like our Sai Kung in Kowloon, Hong Kong. I always laugh about it. My husband has a Saigon and we have a Sai Kung.
Sai means West but I am not sure what Kung means. The Chinese dictionary says tribute, revenue, superior, to present as tribute, to advance, to levy a tax.
doesn't really matter wat its called now just dont talk bout it in vn
cause the cops hear ya or n e body tells bout it then u can go to jail ther cause
they'll think ur gonna start a war again

I think they're called Saigon because they probably moved to the US for fear of communist oppression... I thought you supported communism...

.
Anyway Saigon is the traditional name which most of the vietnamese here use... i think.

Yes, Saigon is more cultural while Ho Chi Minh is more political.

It's silly to expect Ho Chi Minh city to have songs written about as Saigon has. The name Saigon has been around for hundreds of years while Ho Chi Minh is barely three decades old.

I prefer saigon because most companys in vietnam would use saigon like Saigon Water Park and Saigon Beer. I have not seen anywhere in HoChiMinh City where people have shops with Ho Chi minh city included in their shop name.
I just got home from vietnam about 5 weeks ago. :/

Again, you can not compare the popularity between Saigon and Ho Chi Minh like that. Saigon is the historical name of the city while Ho Chi Min, however political it might be, is new.

I'm assuming it's because Prey Nokor isn't a Vietnamese name, but a Khmer one. Both Saigon and Ho Chi Minh are Vietnamese names for the same city.
I don't think it was intended to offend Khmers
