The Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad

The Group of Universities for the Advancement of Vietnamese Abroad(hereinafter referred to as "GUAVA"), a consortium of institutions of higher learning in North America currently offering programs of instruction in the Vietnamese language, was formed at the University of Washington on August 1, 1993.

Current members of GUAVA are:

• Arizona State University
• Cornell University
• Harvard University
• Texas Tech University
• University of California-Berkeley
• University of California-Los Angeles
• University of Hawaii
• University of Michigan
• University of Washington
• University of Wisconsin-Madison
• Yale University

GUAVA invites applications for membership from all other North American universities with an active interest in the teaching of Vietnamese; it also intends to extend its cooperative activities where appropriate to other institutions of higher education outside North America.

Vấn đề thiếu thông tin về nền văn học hiện đại VN, theo giáo sư Bình, là rất đáng tiếc. Nhưng việc phổ biến sách văn học ở Mỹ lại gắn liền với công việc kinh doanh. Hiện nay nếu có người nào, hoặc công ty nào dịch văn học VN sang bán ở Mỹ thì rất khó thành công. Đơn giản vì dân Mỹ “không quan tâm đến cái gì khác ở VN ngoài chiến tranh, ngay cả tác phẩm nổi tiếng tại VN là Hồ Quý Ly của Nguyễn Xuân Khánh cũng khó mà bán tại Mỹ nếu dịch ra”.

This could be very helpful, as the VSA at my school wants to start a Vietnamese class in white-man's-land Ohio.

August 1, 1993 ? so it was 10 years ago, and I never heard of them.

They also must have translated the name literally out of a dictionary, for I failed not to understand what it meant !!!

Truly hope they manage better now after those ten 10 years...

We need Vietnamese as a course at Duke University. The only Asian language offered is Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. Maybe i could lobby for something like this.

Why doesn't this supprise me. Hehe i always new Viets are smart......
