Here's a pretty good list:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_food

I'd recommend:

1. Pho

2. Bún thịt nướng: One of the more popular (and simple) Vietnamese dishes

3. Cơm tấm – Grilled pork (either ribs or shredded) plus a Vietnamese dish called bi (bì) (thinly shredded pork mixed with cooked and thinly shread pork skin) over broken rice

4. Bò 7 Món: Vietnamese seven courses of Beef.

5. Bún Bò Hu? – Spicy beef noodle soup

6. Bánh cuốn: Rice flour rolls and/or pancakes sometimes stuffed with ground pork and onion.

7. Thịt heo quay: BBQ pork ---but make sure it's wild pig. biggrin.gif

8. Spring rolls (Gỏi cuốn) also known as Vietnamese fresh rolls. They are rice paper rolls that often include shrimp, herbs, pork, rice vermicelli and other ingredients wrapped up and dipped in Nước chấm or peanut sauce.

9. Bún riêu – noodle soup made of thin rice noodles and topped with crab and shrimp paste, served in a

10. Vietnamese sub sandwiches

11. Vietnemese egg rolls

I've actually come across an online travel journal of some Americans who went to Vietnam. They included pictures of themselves eating dog at a restaurant. Yuck. Dog is actually eaten more in northern Vietnam than in southern Vietnam. Many countries in Asia eat dog. The Japanese do not, however. But it seems Vietnam and S. Korea eat it the most. But from what I've seen, the S. Koreans probably eat more since they actually import dog bred on farms for human consumption from other countries like China. Also, they tend to eat bigger dogs--those big Korean yellow dogs. Cat is also very popular in S. Korea.

Cat was made illegal in Vietnam, because the government wanted more cats around to eat mice and rats. Don't know if this is still true.

Of course, it is well known that during wars throughout history, the family pet is always the first to go into the cooking pot--in all countries. Cannibalism occurs all over the place too, during past wars and famines, including in those countries that look down on dog eaters.

And on that cheerful note, I hope it wets your appetite, insist01. naughty.gif

nguoicasison : My god how retarded !!! he's not asking if he should drink tap water (ps : yeah...avoid doing so..) but about the food !
Street pho will be simmering in the pot all day, chances of getting sick are way slighter than if you have a mayonnaise sandwich in the US !!! icon_rolleyes.gif
You sound like you've never even set foot there...the hell would you know ?!?
The food's really safe to eat, especially street food since it'll be boiling all day or made on the go from ingredients that are no older than 24 hrs, chances of bacterias surviving are near to 0...Funnily enough, it's more likely to get indigestions at fancy restaurants. Raw meat and ingredients are still HIGHLY unadvised though. But anyone w/ common sense knows that !
