Full Version: South China Sea should be renamed East Sea
Asia Finest Discussion Forum > Asian Culture > Vietnamese Chat

I think this is a very appropriate proposal since the sea embraces half of Vietnam, running the length of over 1700km. Also, historically we've always known the sea as Bien Dong or Dong Hai (East Sea) in Han-Viet.

I agreed. Let's sign a petition that says, "South China Sea should be rename to "East Asia Sea.""
asean.asia
Too broad. Korea calls the sea to her right (Sea of Japan) as East Sea, and Viet Nam calls the sea to her right (South China Sea) as East Sea.

"Sea of Vietnam" is another alternative. laugh.gif

Agreed. I think the best one is Indochina Sea and in Vietnamese it is Biển Đông Dương or Đông Hải Dương (hải dương in Vietnamese like Viện Hải dương học - Institute of Oceanography) (in short, Biển Đông) icon_smile.gif

Southeast Asia Sea is a suitable name, since it's in southeast Asia and surrounded mostly southeast Asian countries.
asean.asia
With all these lame names, we should just keep it as South China Sea. laugh.gif

Southeast Asia Sea
makes more sense then South China Sea. Come to think of it South China Sea is pretty lame too, plus it's shameful how China is trying to use that name as a claim to the entire body of water. WTF? laugh.gif
asean.asia
The purpose of name change is to let other nations know who rule the sea. The current name, South China Sea, makes it sounds like the Sea belongs to China. Southeast Asia Sea makes it sounds like it belongs to Southeast Asia. laugh.gif

The purpose of name change is to let other nations know who rule the sea. When it comes to national security, we have to control South China Sea and make sure our navy have absolute control over it. The current name, South China Sea, makes it sound like the Sea belongs to China. laugh.gif

Are you agreeing or disagreeing with me. It's a fact that the PRC is attempting to use the a name as a claim to entire sea and and the islands within. shrug.gif
asean.asia
There is no difference between South China Sea and Southeast Asia Sea. One sounds like it belongs to China and other sounds like it belongs to Southeast Asia. If Viet Nam wants to claim the sea to the east, we must make it sounds like it belongs to Viet Nam ... the only way is to rename it to Sea of Vietnam.

Not really, Southeast Asia Sea is a generalize term, while South China Sea is specific. Naming it that doesn't mean it belongs to any one country, it would the denote the sea's location, which is in Southeast Asia. It's a very logical name.
asean.asia
It is not as simple as sea's location, but the meaning behind the name. laugh.gif

Well the meaning behind the name is it's location and the geographic region that relates to it most. It makes sense.

Why not everybody call it whatever they want?

That way everyone will be happy, problem solved!

What's the fu-king point of reeducating the white man? Native Americans have been trying for centuries to stop the white man from calling Christopher Columbus the discoverer of the Americas to no avail. This name is really no big deal because at least it does reflect the geography of the location. What pisses me off is that when the fu-king white man invaded Da Nang while ba que cheered, the fu-king white man renamed the beaches in Da Nang to China Beach and that's a fu-king crime that ba que is responsible for. If ba que corrected the white man in the first place, the fu-king white tourists wouldn't go around Da Nang, asking where China beach is located and then they would get mad when no Vietnamese in Da Nang know where China Beach is. I blame the ba que for this fu-king name. I hate ba que.

Good idea! Vietnamese could call it east Vietnam sea. Chinese might call it south China sea. It's ok for Filipinos to call it west or southwest Philippines sea.

One of the reasons why the international community calls it south China sea is because mainland China is such a large and prominent landscape that people tend to ignore other smaller countries surrounding it! Looking at the global map, it's understandable why people call it south China sea.

Since I like the sea so much, I'm going to call it xyz sea. biggthumpup.gif (I hope no territorial property issues involved here!)
