The only thing I've heard about adoption from Laos is that it's not possible. There was no factual basis behind the answer. Does anyone have a definitive answer? If it's not possible, why? Please withhold posts containing "opinions" or hearsay. And if you aren't positive about whether it is can you provide a resource? Thank you in advance.

"Prospective adopting American citizen parents should be aware that the Lao government has currently suspended all adoptions of Lao children by foreigners."
http://travel.state.gov/family/adoption/co...untry_2797.html

There's tons of $hit you have to do and ALOT of people dont know what forms and such they have to get. So it is really almost impossible.
There are no clear laws for adoption in Laos and no agency to handle it.. so whatever the people decide to tell you is it. o_o And what they say about Document fraud is so true lol.

There's tons of hoops to jump through. It's much easier for people to adopt from other countries like China or Korea cause who wants to go through the hassle. And honestly it is really freaking hard to adopt if you do not live in Laos or have really good connections... >_>; Even with connections, it takes a long time so it's easier if youre an American ex-pat living in Laos. Atleast for my family, It does take longer then 1 - 2 years. passports is the hardest crap to get for a minor.

So in my opinion and experiance due to all the $hit you go through with both governments... If you dont have connections then it's kinda hopeless and long....shrug.gif

in general it's difficult to adopt from laos but it may still be possible.
you may have read/heard that the lao government has currently suspended all adoptions of lao children by foreigners
this is true but the gov't can make an exception.

Was thinking about adopting an orphan.

We're definitely not rich people or have many connections icon_sad.gif

I hope you will keep us posted on your process if you decided to go through with the adoption.
there seems to be tons of reading material and adoption agencies available to help you if you choose to adopt in country like china.

if you are successful and keep good documentation, some other families will probably want to follow your experience.

I don't know about adopting a child directly from Laos probably because it is a Communist country, but you can probably adopt a Lao or Issan child from Northern Thailand like in Nong Khai region I have been there and the population is mostly Issan or Lao just a thought. Good luck.
