Hello, my name is Sean and Im an 18 year old American. I plan to backpack through Southeast Asia from August to November. I am very interested in Asia culture, particularly buddhism. Im most interested in Vietnam.

I have heard that Vietnamese parents are very strict. Are Vietnamese teenagers allowed to go to clubs and socialize? Would it be considered improper for me to ask a girl out on a date?

Yes, you're correct. Most Viet parents are very strict specially on their daughters. Some are more relax if they see you as a good person to ask their daughter out.
It's hard to say though. Depend on each Viet family, i guess. In my case, my sisters are not allowed to come home after 8 o'clock in the evening. My sister must have permission from my parent to go out for a party and must come back no later than 10 o'clock. However, my brothers and I can go home after midnight
My parent always ask my brother and I to keep an eye on my young sisters but I often keep an eye on other girls outside the family

For the American guy, he try to get a romance I guess. So the most possible way (and practical one) to get a romance in Vietnam with a local girl is to give her money. Good girls went to heaven already and bad girls would go anywhere with you.
