Former South Vietnam's National Anthem:

The national anthem of Viet Nam is entitled "Thanh Nie^n Ha`nh Khu'c" (Call to the Youth). It reflects the eagerness of the present generation in its struggle for national independence.
The national anthem was composed by Luu Huu Phuoc; and, due to its haunting rhythms and great patriotic impetus, it immediately conquered the youth. Consequently, it was adopted as the national anthem by an Ordinance of June 14, 1948 of the first Temporary National Government of Viet Nam.

CALL TO THE CITIZENS

Citizens, our nation must become free
With one same heart let's sacrifice ourselves
For our future let's brave all dangers
To secure our land for now and ever
Though die we may on the field
Our blood we will spill for the land
And when our race needs to be saved
We shall always respond in time
And fight with breat mind till the day when
Vietnam becomes a shining light
Citizens, let's step forward now
Citizens, rally the flags now
And save our land,
Make its name shine
Forever worthy of the Lac Hong race

Former South Vietnam's Flag:

The national flag of Viet Nam was officially adopted by an Ordinance of June 14, 1948, signed by the Chief of the Temporary National Government of Viet Nam. The Ordinance specified the characteristics of the flag with the following words:

"... The national emblem is a flag of yellow background, the height of which is equal to two-thirds of its width. In the middle of the flag, and along its entire width, there are three horizontal red bands having each a height equal to one-fifteenth of the total height, and being separated from one another by spaces of the same dimensions."

The yellow background is the traditional color of the ancestral land, symbolizing the golden rice grains and the metal considered one of the most precious by humanity. The three red bands represent the three regions of Vietnam, North, Central, and South, reunited in the national community. Red, a vibrant color, is a symbolic of success.

ENGLISH TRANSLATION

CALL TO THE FRONT

Soldiers of Vietnam, we go forward,
With the one will to save our Fatherland,
Our hurried steps are sounding on the long and arduous road.
Our flag, red with the blood of victory, bears the spirit of our country.
The distant rumbling of the guns passes over the bodies of our foes.
Overcoming all hardships, together we build our resistance bases.
Ceaselessly for the people's cause let us struggle,
Let us hasten to the battle-field!
Forward! All together advancing!
Our Vietnam is strong, eternal.

Soldiers of Vietnam, we go forward!
The gold star of our flag in the wind
Leading our people, our native land, out of misery and suffering.
Let us join our efforts in the fight for the building of a new life.
Let us stand up and break our chains
For too long have we swallowed our hatred.
Let us keep ready for all sacrifices and our life will be radiant.
Ceaselessly for the people's cause let us struggle,
Let us hasten to the battle-field!
Forward! All together advancing!
Our Vietnam is strong, eternal.

CHXHCN Viet Nam's flag

The Vietnam flag was officially adopted on November 30, 1955.

The gold five-pointed star symbolizes the five groups of workers in the building of socialism (intellectuals, peasants, soldiers, workers and youths), while the red symbolizes bloodshed, and the revolutionary struggle.

Although that's the word for word meaning, it sounds abit grotesque for national anthem. The Vietnamese line just sounds so smooth and patriotic minus the gore. LOL

We will kill for Vietnam, we will also die for Vietnam. That's 2000 years of Vietnamese martial spirit.

The national anthem begins with "Oh say can you see?".

Can anyone recognize these lines?

Nam Quoc Son Ha
No, the national anthem isn't meant to give Vietnamese people an angry disposition. Rather, it makes us realise how lucky we are to be born a descendant of the Lac Hong and that we must defend our right to live and prosper as a race.

The Vietnam that we have today was built upon millions and millions of Kinh martyrs sacrificing their lives for their descendants. That's why we should be proud of our martial spirit.

Most of the first wave refugees were high officials and higly-educated people. Most of the South Vietnam armies were still fighting (even though Thieu is already gone, bastard). Many generals commited sucides after hearing the news.

You do know the people that hates the current government aren't just former South Vietnam soldiers and families, right? Most people that hate the current government are actually ordinary citizens, and even former VC soldiers that realized they got robbed. Except for a few extremist (a few thousand) that are in their 50s now, others really don't care. My grandma told me stories about the day the VC came, it wasn't violent, besides those trying to flee. But for most, they just come in and broke into the food supply to give it to the citizens, because they truly thinks that South Vietnamese are dirt poor and starving like all the propagandas they hear. Most people today that hate the government, had nothing to do with the war, it is because of the corruptions, the intransparency of the system. How would you like it if you a college graduate, working your @$$ off to get to the best college too, and can't get a job, when people with connection can easily pick up a job at the hotel or airport where they can rack in "bonuses."

Two. The communists are crap... they can't do $hit and vietnam is not getting better. Alot of people were kicked out of their houses just so that thecommunists could work on their latest project...building a park in Ben Tre.

Three... pledge of allegiance starts I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united states of america...etc
The National Anthem is the Star Spangled Banner which starts off

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming?...etc

So if u don't know what the $%^& your talking about %^&* off and stop talkin bull%^&*

The Vietnamese Flag is one of the ugliest flags in the world. In a rush to copy china and the soviet union, vietnam came up with this hideous looking piece of cloth. It should be changed to reflect something unique about the vietnamese people. Even cambodian's flag looks better.

Can you tell me what is the reason for you to conlude that Vietnamese flag copied the design from China flag? As far as I know, the design of the current PRC's flag first appeared in 1949, much later than the Vietnamese flag, which waved for the first time in 1940. How can the Vietnamese flag copied from another flag that hadn't existed?

Anyway, I partly agree with you that the Cambodian flag is beautiful, especially when the hideous depiction of Angkor Wat is removed from the flag.

You are right. Chinese flag appeared much later. But I think vietnamese flag was copied from the Soviets Union flag. Just remove the hammer and sickle and move the star to the middle and you got the vietnamese flag. embarassedlaugh.gif2

YOu forgot two steps:
- Enlarge the star
- Change the color of the star from red to gold.

By the way, it need four modifications for a Soviet flag to become a Vietnam flag, so you should not use the word "Just" since it's not that simple.

Let me see if I can do something with the Turkish flag, for example, with four steps:
- Remove the crescent
- Move the star to the center
- Enlarge the star
- Change the color of the star from white to gold.

Ha, so can we conclude that the Vietnamese flag copied from the Turkish flag?

After all, I just want to point out the gaps in your arguments. It is the truth that no one deny, even the VCs, that the Vietnamese flag was partly inspired by the Soviet flag, at least in the red background. The gold star, however, was not from the Soviet flag, which used a red star instead.

The Soviet Union is the recognized leader of the Communist movements in the 20 century, so it was not surprising that the Vietnam flag was partly inspired by the Soviet flag. We can find similarities in the history, with the French flag and the Argentinian flag, which isnpired a lot of other flags.
