Vietnam donates 1,000 tonnes rice to North Korea

Hanoi, July 7

QUOTE
Vietnam, the world's second-largest rice exporter, will ship 1,000 tonnes of 10-percent broken rice in food aid to help fellow communist state North Korea recover after an April train disaster.
Prime Minister Phan Van Khai approved the rice assistance to help Pyongyang deal with the consequences of the disaster, the Dau Tu (Investment) newspaper said on Wednesday.

The April disaster, in which a train laden with explosives blew up at a station, razed much of the town of Ryongchon near the Chinese border and killed about 170 people and injured 1,300 in impoverished and hunger-stricken North Korea.

Vietnam competes with the world's top exporter, Thailand, in the rice business. It has sold 2.25 million tonnes abroad in the first half of this year, down 3.3 percent from a year earlier.

We have enough food, but not EVERYONE gets to have it. Only those who have money or who grow it themselves can have it.

It's like America, there is enough wealth for everyone, but most of it is in the hands of a few rich people rather than all.

In every country there will be rich or poor, but if Vietnamese were willing to share their rice, then there would be enough to feed everyone I guess.

lol Vietnam is the 2nd largest rice exporter and the 2nd largest cashew exporter as well.

You see Vietnam is a place with lots of vegetation. Hell I'm sure you've seen lots of Vietnam War movies with all those jungle scenaries.

Vietnam is poor is cash but it isn't starving.

Vietnam has enough food to feed it's population, obviously not the world.

The Mekong Delta in Southern Vietnam is one of the most fertile places in the world allowing Vietnam to be the world's 2nd largest rice, cashew and coffee exporter.

Well i can gurantee that 90% of it will go to the army, want to make a bet?
Ogumo
Wow...vietnamese feeding north koreans and keeping them alive by doing so. How lovely.
ToNguyenTrungNam
" helping out our comrade" north vietnam and north korea should be good friend...haha
fiji
Vietnam is poor in $ and modern comodities, but not food and clothes. Vietnam since 1954 have not starve like North Korea. North Korea is a place with plenty of raw materials, but not enough flat land to grow rice or to raise cattles. So I guess Vietnam is doing the right thing and help out its comrade.

NOrth Vietnam is helping north korea to strenghten there military so they can take out america! embarassedlaugh.gif ! The VC want to take revenge on america all of the lose in vietnam war! embarassedlaugh.gif

I always thought the U.S. was the second largest exporter of rice behind Thailand but ahead of Vietnam. When did Vietnam begin exporting more rice than the U.S.?

never heard of this icon_confused.gif

Although Vietnam is poor money-wise, the Vietnamese people rarely suffer from famine and hunger. When I was in the countryside visiting relatives, the neighbours invited us over, fished up a large 4-5kg ca' loc' and treated us to a feast. These poor folks usually grow fruit trees and breed fish on top of rice growing to supplement their income and daily nutrience requirements.

Now I'm even more confused, I started searching around randomly and I found a business article which stated that India was the second largest rice exporter in the world. Or at least it was in 2002. Blah, it seems to change almost seasonally.
Nam Quoc Son Ha
Vietnam has overtaken India for the last 2 years. India was suffering from flooding and drought.
IORI_2k4
Vietnam is the perfect place to grow rice

tropical all year long with plenty of rain and land.

They also drink snakeblood because it's supposed to up your labido.
Bchung
does US even grow rice?
fujisan_8
Yeah the USA does grow rice. I think in the South of the country where it is humid...Louisiana or some state had a lot of rice crops.

They only overtaken Vietnam occassionally, and that's only if they are lucky enough to get enough rain, but Vietnam usually has 2nd place.

Vietnam earns US$500 million from rice exports

Vietnam exported 400,000 tonnes of rice in June, bringing its total rice export volume in the first half of this year to 2.25 million tonnes with each sold at US$224.6, according to the Ministry of Trade.

Turnover from overseas rice market has brought in more than US$500 million so far this year-approximately 16 percent more than the same period last year.

The Vietnam Food Association said Vinafood 2 beat ten other rice exporters last week in a bid to sell 150,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines. The Ministry of Trade expects Vietnam to win again next week in a bid to sell 200,000 tonnes of rice to the country. The importer said it prefers to buy rice from Thailand, Vietnam or China.

The Ministry of Trade said the price of rice offered by Asian rice exporters has fallen by US$4 to US$7 per tonne during the last week. The price of rice on the domestic market has also followed the same trend, down roughly VND50 to VND150 per kilo. However, trade experts predict that world demand for rice, which is currently static, is likely to increase due to increasing demand from Colombia, Nigeria, China, Indonesia and Iraq.

They forecast the price of rice on the world market will increase after experiencing a short-term slight decrease.

According to the latest forecast from the US Department of Agriculture, the world’s rice demands in 2004 and 2005 will exceed the supply, requiring countries world-wide to increase their rice stockpiles to ensure the security of their national food supplies.

The Philippines’ food authority has also said it will consider buying another 200,000 tonnes of 25 percent broken rice from Vietnamese rice exporter Vinafood at a price of US$217 to US$220 per FOB (freight on board) tonne. The ministry said Vietnam’s domestic rice supply would be sufficient for the rest of the year as the country expects a significant harvest from the summer-autumn crop.

The Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta, the country’s largest rice-producing region, is expected to reap 17 million tonnes of rice this year and to supply 3.6 million tonnes for export. (VoV)
