Good that we do well in international math competitions. but it is only theory. we are very bad at practice.
i know it because i was in math class in high school. Math lessons were all theory and problems. The time for maths is like...tripple every other subject.
It is very scary sitting through the test every week. You are given 2 questions to do for the entire 3 hours.
The mark you got rarely above 5/10. But in the end of the term, everyone's mark is scaled up to be same with other classes in the school.
From my class before:
nearly all members of the class have won prizes in various competitions in city and national level.
about 10 people go on to study overseas (including me).
3 people won scholarship to study (mainly due to English ability).
2 people finishing university level early and are admitted to do PHD at world top universities.
5 to 10 people took the top positions in some kinds of engineering exam in vietnam.
1 person was in the team winning the "Tri Tue Viet Nam" competition.
We also know math classes from other schools as well.
To be honest, the math problems given in the International Olympiad is not difficult compared to what we are given every week to do. The main problem is how to read, understand & present the solution in English.
Math in itself is a theoretical subject, even here in America it's treated as so. Only when one uses in technical fields like engineering or physics, then the practical aspects of math come out. VN is not too developed yet so we don't have a good engineering education, but Vietnamese people are known to be practical and resourceful.
