QUOTE
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) reckons that deep poverty in Vietnam—defined as a daily income equivalent to under $1—is now only slightly more prevalent than the average for South-East Asia, whereas in 1990 Vietnam's figure was more than twice the regional average (see charts). By this measure, Vietnam has overtaken China, India and the Philippines and now has only slightly more poverty than Indonesia.

Seems like Vietnam is now eradicating deep poverty and is now on par with that for the rest of SEA and even lower than China, India and Phillipines.

Of course, I still don't accept this. I think Vietnam can do better. I hope one day all Vietnamese around the world will contribute more money and investment to the motherland and eradicate poverty even more and make Ho Chi Minh's dream of making Vietnam a beautiful country come true.

Lets show the world that wars and economic sanctions can't keep us down as long as we have the will to fight. biggthumpup.gif

How much more money does Vietnam want from Viet Kieus?

Isn't $5 Billion per year not enough? Would you like the amount to be doubled to $10 Billion per year in remittance? icon_smile.gif

Yes, Yes and yes. Unfortunetly, as the generations move on and the old people die, will the young have any connection to the motherland? Will they send money overseas?

I think Vietnam needs to develop more faster in case in the future the younger generations decide not to send any more money.

The big part of the future remittance of Viet Kieus will come from Viet Kieus who go back to Vietnam and marry a spouse over there. They need to send the money regularly back home to support their spouses' families.

More Vietnamese workers will have more opportunities to compete with the Filipinos workers in Western countries and they can send more remittance back to Vietnam in the future. This is the results of Vietnam getting admitted to the WTO.

Foreign aid to Vietnam only represents about 15% of the national budget. So I doubt the world is really gonna help our brothers and sisters over there.

If the world cannot help Vietnam, then it is Vietnamese who need to fill that gap. icon_smile.gif

I'm ignorant when it comes to investment in Vietnam. My dad just bought land over there, but it's not under his name bc he's not a resident there. Why can't Viet kieu buy land under their name to avoid any scams from the person is whose name is on the paperwork?

Viet Kieus are usually citizens of foreign countries, and the government most probably takes a dim view of foreigners owning land in Vietnam - Let's say that any Vietnamese government that allows a substantial percentage of the land to be owned by foreigners, Vietnamese government would have some serious explaining to do to HCM's ghost. Right now, the government is experimenting with easing up the rules, specifically for Viet Kieus.

Why not use the US model...Sell as much as possible to anybody...

As long as they are able to Pay Taxes on that Property...and if they can No longer pay Tax, confiscate the property

If Vietnam does that, then the foreigners will buy up more than 50% of Vietnamese land. icon_smile.gif
