Vovinam provides a system of martial arts techniques that encompass various forms of self-defense and combat based on the principle of Yin-Yang development. Vovinam adapts the techniques of other styles of martial arts worldwide, and updates itself. Hence, Vovinam techniques are rich and varied.

Vovinam-Viet Vo Dao was founded by Master Nguyen Loc in 1938. He grew up in the period which Vietnam was still under the French colonial rule. At that time, young men either were seduced by the French into the lusty lives or joined the revolutionary war against the French. Master Nguyen Loc believed that the only way to free Vietnam from the colonial rule was to train the Vietnamese young men to have a strong, invincible will for liberty and independence.

That will must be produced by a strong body and a rational mind. Carrying on that belief, he practiced hardly and researched many Vietnamese traditional martial arts as well as many foreign martial arts.

There are at least half a dozen Vietnamese martial arts aside from Viet Vo Dao: Vo Co Truyen, Vo Binh Dinh, etc.

Here is one Vo Co Truyen video clip::

Here are three Vo Binh Dinh clips (the kid is sensational):

Life would be boring, if there was just one Vietnamese martial art icon_wink.gif

Aside from that, there quite a few Vietnamese who are proficient at several Chinese, Japanese and Korean martial arts and Muay Thai, so we are not shy about learning from others icon_wink.gif That's what keeps us alive icon_wink.gif

There is an Indonesian martial art called "penchak silat", whose techniques I believe could be nicely complementary to any of the Vietnamese martial arts:

"penchak silat" is used to train Indonesian commandos, so these techniques are no nonsense and they are not used to play "Let's see who can garner the most points" icon_wink.gif

When it comes to Vietnamese martial arts, the first thing comes up in my mind is Vo Binh Dinh, not this Vovinam thing.
