WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A U.S. submarine has collided with a Japanese merchant vessel, a senior U.S. Navy official told CNN.

The USS Newport News was surfacing in the Arabian Sea south of the Straits of Hormuz when it hit the Japanese ship, the official said.

There were no injuries, he said, but there was some damage.

"Neither ship is in extremis," the official said late Monday local time in Washington D.C., meaning the damage was not serious enough to put the ships in jeopardy.

The incident recalled a previous collision between a U.S. submarine and a Japanese ship.

On February 9, 2001, the USS Greeneville struck the training ship Ehime Maru during an emergency ascent demonstration.

Nine people, including four high school students, were killed. Twenty-six others on the ship were rescued.

he US should stop this $hit and be more careful, but they won't cause as they've proven many times, Japanese lives mean nothing to them. I wonder what their bull$hit excuse will be this time.

It is not like the US slaughtered hundred's of thousands of civilians in Tokyo in cold blood. Why are you so worked up about? I'm sure the americans regret this.

Does it matter if US will provide a legitimate excuse or not? Will Japan do anything that will risk its relationship with Uncle Sam if it doesn't get a good reason?? No. The US captain will bow a few times infront of Japanese cameras and that will be that.

Yes and from what I remember from the 2001 incident of the Ehime Maru where those poor Japanese schoolkids died, the fu-king U.S captain in charge of the sub was cleared of any wrongdoing. Bull$hit. thumbsdown.gif thumbsdown.gif thumbsdown.gif

Seeing as a Japanese TSS sub also hit a civilian ship a few weeks ago, I don't think they should blame the Americans all too much. The Gulf is a crowded, noisy place, and also shallow. A big Los Angeles class will be tight in those waters.

Anytime a US warship especially a sub has a collision its career ending for the commanding officer.. As for the previous collision the C.O. of that boat took full responsibility, lost command and career. The US Navy spent millions recovering the bodies of the victims. So the USA does and did accept responsibility and did everything within its power to own up to the mistake. The latest although I don't know the details once again was a US mistake and without doubt that C.O is history.

It's true then, two half-wits don't make one.

It's a shame that this happened. Japan media should play up everything the U.S. does involving japanese citizens.

Okay, but now you have to ask yourself: "can we Japanese really afford to be anything else than the proper on-our-knees with d!ck-in-mouth geisha that we've been for the last 60 years?"

I mean, if you assert yourself with the Americans, they might not want your cooch anymore, and then you all might have to kiss and make up with other Asians, and god forebid you all have to do that being inherently superior to other Asians as your right wing likes to put it.

Nothing personal against you or against Japanese in general, just saying that if you want to be assertive with the US, you better be ready to make friends elsewhere. The world is cold and lonely place if you have no friends.

Funny how the right-wing made a big ruckus about apologies when the 1st sub collision occurred and yet, when there are demands for apologies for things which aren't accidents, they come up with every excuse in the book.

It was reported as an accident and thats the end of it. The United States wounldn't risk a million dollar sub for nothing. If they wanted the Japanese Ship sunk they could do it with better methods.

The better question is can we afford not to? I say resist america on every front possible. If they become frustrated all the better. They have taken advantage of us for too long.

Now that's the spirit of a true Asian. If only all Japanese could realize that we can actually form the East Asian coalition to finally drive the US out of the Eastern Pacific.
