Hi, everyone. Have you ever noticed that most older generation vietnamese abroad and most native vietnamese in vietnam often comment on people's body types? Whenever I visit some of these people, they always comment on how fat I am and I'm not even obese or anything but they will look for something to say because commenting on people's body types is popular. This would be extremely rude in American culture but I know vietnamese people don't mean it in a disparaging way because being fat isn't even negative in Vietnamese culture yet it still annoys me. I don't want to be reminded that i'm fat everytime I meet a vietnamese person yet it always comes up. They always comment on my weight! This bothers me so much that it has even played a part in my personal decision to lose weight. Does this often happen to you and how do you feel about it?

Like I said, I'm not that fat but people just like to comment on it because it's a popular subject in conversation. And if someone is fat, or has some other problems with their body, it's not polite to bring it up to them. If you went up to someone and said "you're ugly" or "you're fat" they would slap the fu*k out of you but of course you would never do something like that in real life. Only have the balls to insult people anonymously online.

oh shut up.

it happens in most asian countries. if you even have a pound of flesh on you or any minor imperfections it's suddenly OK to go on and on about what you need to do to improve yourself. it would never happen in the west and is pretty much a given in the east.

not just Viets, Koreans, Chinese, Japanese people are all like that.
On other asian forum, I read many stories from teenagers about their families calling them fat. They werent actually fat, still healthy weight, and some almost underweight.
.
Does it happen to me? Luckily, no.

well... if you want to look better, work out regularly.
Run 1.5 miles every day for 2 weeks and you will be muscular and possible be able to beat up these people. j/k
But yes, run a lot and you will get skinny. Ever see those marathon runners?

But when you're skinny, they also comment on how you're too skinny and need to gain weight! When I was around 105 lbs, my parents got scared and said that I needed to gain weight.

^ Yeah, my S/O's grandparents often told me I looked skinny, I'm not that skinny, I'm 5'5" and 113 pounds.
For my case, I always take that as compliment, because to me, being called 'too skinny' is better than being called 'too fat'

You should check out the weight and height index. This tell you the appropriate weight for your height. Google it and you will find it.
Lastly, if you feel good, and you are eating healthy food with regular excercise, you should simple be happy regardless of what others think.

Ah, I know how THAT feels.

When I was in HK, I felt like such a fatass. If you're a guy and you're not stick-thin, then everyone will call you "buff." If you're a girl and you're not stick-thin, then you're "fat." My cousin from there kept on complaining about how her boobs (what boobs?!) were making her look "so fat."

if i haven't seen my relatives in a while then they always comment on my weight. i don't know if they actually care about my health or they just wanted to make conversation about what is most noticeable about me, which is my appearance. it used to bother me but i don't care anymore.

I don't think it's just a Vietnamese thing; it's just an old Asian people thing. I'm Korean and my relatives constantly do that. My fiance is Cantonese and every time I see his mom she asks me how much I weigh now.

I just humor her but if it was anyone other than some old Asian person I'd be offended. And you know what, they're never ever happy with anyone's weight. If they call you fat and you lose some weight then they'll say you're too skinny and that you should get fat.

Simple to remember:
BMI = weight/height^2
e.g. height= 1.81m, weight=70kg, then BMI = 70/ (1.81^2) =21.37
Best BMI = [19, 22], you should aim for BMI=21
Overweight & obese = [25, +infinity)
Even if BMI is in good range, you need to check your lifestyle as well.

My last memory it when I was 16?? A friend of my mum used to feel me up and comment on how I was a big boy and looking strong, didn't care what she said, I always tried to avoid her every time she came over coz I thought she like in a scary way,

Surprisingly, I don't have any. But I do have a little kangaroo pouch. Nothing hangs from the side or the back, just the lower front...lol And I would rather someone feed my fat arse then grab me.
