Vietnamese goods stake out Cambodian market share

Vietnamese products are now available in every corner of Cambodia. The results hail from great efforts by Vietnamese enterprises to gain a firm foothold in overseas markets.

Hang Viet Company, member of the high-quality Vietnamese products club, specialises in promoting Vietnamese products in Cambodian markets. Company Director Le Xuan Khue cited the recent surveys of Cambodia which gave Vietnamese goods a 40 percent market share, a massively increased percentage compared to the previous surveys. Market occupation by Vietnamese products, including plastics, instant noodles, and garments, is up to 70 percent at border fairs and trade centres. Vietnam has become the third largest trade partner for Cambodia among the ASEAN countries, director Khue added.

To further penetrate the market, Hang Viet opened a representative office last February in the capital city Phnom Penh. The office will provide Vietnamese companies with information about markets, legal requirements, and will facilitate meetings with Cambodian partners. Mr. Khue affirmed, "We will provide free information for any enterprises aiming to do long-term business in Cambodia".

Reports from the high-quality Vietnamese products club revealed that around 18 Vietnamese enterprises are planning long-term business in Cambodia, and will open representative offices or build facilities.

Market experts predict that with such steady occupation, Vietnamese products could claim up to 50 percent of Cambodian market shares next year. Moreover, Vietnamese products will penetrate not only the Cambodian market but also other neighbouring markets.

At a recent meeting with some Vietnamese businesses in Ho Chi Minh City, director of Cambodia's Trade Promotion Department, Chheng Saroeun, said many Vietnamese goods have been exported to Thailand through Cambodia, including footwear, food, and clothing. It shows that Vietnamese goods are competitive in many regional markets.

He said that Vietnam can boost its exports to Cambodia and Thailand if businesses lower costs to reduce retail prices.

However, most Vietnamese goods are exported to Cambodia in small volume as only a few operations can cover Cambodia’s high import taxes. This will affect future promotion of Vietnamese goods into the market.

Another problem is that Vietnamese goods must compete with a variety of goods from Thailand, and China, which enter Cambodian markets under the preferential tariffs granted to WTO members. While Vietnam’s key export items to Cambodia include plastics, garments and textiles, instant noodles, footwear, Thailand and China also claim large market shares with similar products.

Mr. Cheng Saroeun said the key factor in penetrating the Cambodian markets was reasonable prices. He added that Vietnamese businesses should establish trade agencies and packaging workshops in Cambodia to reduce costs. In addition, they should take advantage of Cambodia’s WTO accession to export goods from Cambodia. Recently, China, Japan and the Republic of Korea decided to reduce tariffs for goods imported from Cambodia.
