Who was that white girl with Emperor Ham Nghi?
Johannjs
She is Marcelle LALOË, his wife... They're getting married in Algiers where Ham Nghi was deported by the French...

Wow, these are great old pics of Vietnam, TDscorpion. Have anyone noted the French-style light poles in the 4th picture ? I didn't even know that Cho Ben Thanh (Les Halles Centrales) was there that far back. Thanks, bro !

Looking at the ladies in the picture, I wonder what's the standard of beauty in Vietnam in those time.

One of the most easiet recognized beauty standard is the shade of the skins. The shade skin of the ladies were absolutely paler than the servants behind them in the picture

Yes, the little boy is the King. King Duy Tan as indicated in the picture. Yeah, this is the first time I see him as a little boy too embarassedlaugh.gif
He's one of the many emperors that go against the French during colonial era. I also noticed that the servants has no shoes as well. It looks as if one must not wear shoes when one is a servant. You can also noticed in the other pictures as well. I think so. I don't know. That's why I came to this place to learn something about my culture too biggrin.gif

And that beauty standard still prevails today, being white is being beautiful.

The standard of beauty for whom?

As for me, I would suggest that the same standard of beauty has never changed over the years: it's CLASS EDUCATION.

A Top Model of Tonkin 1884-1885?

Look at the fine hands, the nails, at what she's wearing inside.
